I doubt you can do it on $500 per month easily today ubnless the boat was very well set up prior and had a few bags of provisions already on board not counted in the budget.

I just put on 10 cases of beer today. that would have stuffed you for a month or 2

Last time I was at Langkawi we were eating for as cheap as $0.40 cents for meal as well (noodles in a paper cone)

I'll drink most anything but Milwaukee's Best I'll only drink when there is nothing else available. Actually this year there's not a lot of bargains in beer here in FL so I'm having to stock 20 cases of the premium brands. A buck or two more than the stuff I usually buy but at $18 a case it's still less than half the price of a case in the Bahamas. (around $40 a case).

it can be done. i did a 3 month trip from pcb fl. to the keys and back on an sj21. i took it easy the whole time. total cost $1,214.89 . i ate like a king everyday.(no frig by the way). if you got the money spend it.but you dont realy need it. it buys luxuries which most people confuse with pleasures. luxury makes you lazy which is funny because you you have to work so hard for it. they make life easy i was told buy a friend. illusion i told him. you work so much to get your luxury that that becomes your life. my sj has no gps, reefer microwave, tv, computer, huge motor, water maker, hot water, blah blahblah etc etc. ive had them and dont miss them. luxury has to be maintained and that makes life not easy or pleasureable. give me pleasureable life over a luxurious life any day. on the other hand if you have loads of money what does it matter.

true the sj is to small for most luxuies. i made that choice after sailing with friends on a luxury laden 40 ft for 6 months. they spent as much time fixing luxuries as enjoying them. i actually stripped many items from the sj when i got her. i dont live on the boat i use it to live in the world. if i had a larger boat it would be just as simply.

we spent a year in Frendh Polynesia for $1200 including boat repairs and maintenance. Fast forward that to today, accounting for inflation, and you are looking at $6,000. We weren't deprived, just didn't eat out or drink much, caught lots of fish and lobster, bought local staples. We undoubtedly would have had some larger expenses, if we'd stayed out longer for boat maintenance, etc. In short, had a great time.

So yes, it's probably still doable but you aren't going to be playing 'marina on the right' and hanging out in bars and restaurants.

Hey Creakyboy..... there's a bunch of us loving the duty free liquor shopping in Langkawi, Malaysia..... you can pay between 1.30MYR and 1.80MYR for a beer!! but that's not all - 1L of Gordon's Gin is a mere $40MYR ;-)
