water hose and drinking water

I bought an expandable water hose at the boat show">Annapolis Boat Show only to read the inserted material that it is not to be used as a hose to use for drinking water. Does any one know if there is a true hazard and what hazard there is?

Re: water hose and drinking water

I have been looking at those because our expensive lay flat hose lasted all of two minutes before making lots of little fountains down the pontoon

Will be interested to see what the answer is.

Just like a "non-certified for drinking water" pvc hose, it can grow bacteria or degrade in the outdoors so they warn against it. For example, the xhose has this warning:

I sure drank from a lot of regular garden hoses as a kid so not sure how big of a health danger it is but more of a chemical exposure thing.

Re: water hose and drinking water

as long as you flush the hose first you will be fine, the water isn't gong to pickup something bad enough to matter in the time it flows though the hose when filling your tank

the hose on the dock I bet isn't approved for drinking either

Re: water hose and drinking water

just read an article in a german magazine that here in Germany hoses for drinking water are tested of f.e. chloride, DOC
Dissolved organic carbon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The material will be stored in a bassin for about 6 month and checked for incrustation.
Fouling matters ( viruses and bacterias) are great risk for health.
A good solution seems to be mobile filtersystems like http://www.aqua-sanitec.com/files/do...fo_as_fill.pdf
It shall be switched between water tap and boat.

Hoses certified for use with potable water are readily available. In the US they are generally white, often with a blue stripe.

I clean mine with bleach once a year.

Re: water hose and drinking water

We've been using one for about a year now, and we don't taste any difference. We put the hose away in a bag protected from the sun after each use. Before each use, we allow the water to run through it for a few minutes before filling our tanks.

Re: water hose and drinking water

Thanks for the comments. I doubt filtering would make me feel better. I doubt chemicals filtered out. Does anyone know the real problem? Is it an identified chemical or just that they have not gone to the trouble of a certifying process for potable water. I am inclined to us it but I do not want to be ignorant.

Another way without charcoal:
UV water sterilization for yachts

The water disinfection for the mobile sector has a particularly important role. Often the destinations or mileage are dependent on the capacity of water in the tank of the yacht.

Through greater supply of drinking water and the longer use of water, boat trips get a completely new dimension, the owner uses the UV radiation.

The handling of the alegi plant is completely harmless. The complicated cleaning and rinsing of tanks eliminates as well, such as the storage of hazardous chemicals.

translated from a german site: Übersicht - alegi

Re: water hose and drinking water

Water from PVC hoses, especially those /w brass fittings, may contain lead, endocrine disruptors (like BPA) and neurotoxins.
