Perhaps you wouldn't mind filtering this list to include just coastal cities then? Meanwhile the rest of us will continue to find it a useful resource and perspective.

It is interesting to me as at International Rescue Group as we are presently re-fitting one of our vessels in Acapulco and are certainly aware of the crime rate there.

119 in 100,000, in simple statistics you'd have to know 840 people until one of the gets killed. Or something along those lines.

The mid east generally has a LOW peacetime murder rate. I presume you are not trying to reference areas actually at war, are you?

There has been much discussion about personal safety while cruising. Specifically, murder rates, and murder by firearms in a number of forum discussions. Some CF comments emphasize the fruits of a gun crazy US.

I ran across the number of fatal drug overdoses in the US and it is an average of 15 per 100,000 in 2015. In comparison there were 3.55 homicides by firearms per 100,000 in the US in 2014.

At face value one has a 4.2 times higher chance of dying from a drug overdose than being murdered by a firearm. Or for every murder with a firearm there are 4.2 deaths by drug overdose.

I view the this drug death rate with some amazement. We in the US have bigger problems than gun violence. Seems we have a serious drug problem.

I also suspect a sizable fraction of Mexico's murder rate is directly related to the US drug problem.

Just a slightly tongue in cheek way of noting that statistics need real life qualifications to mean anything. If you take out war related, gang related (and these usually drug related) numbers out everything changes. Someone else mentioned that the US has a drug problem and said that perhaps much of Mexico's murder rate (why only Mexico?) is caused by the US's drug problem without researching Mexico's death by overdose rate. What if Mexico's drug death by overdose rate is higher then the US's? Drawing conclusions based on numbers based on numbers based on selected numbers..........

I think you need to keep looking at the wider picture, for example if you are in Rio Dulce, your nearest 2 airports are Guatemala City and San Pedro Sula, both of which are not on the coast but are on the list!!

Thank you for common sense on this post! I've spent 30 years in and out of Mexico with the state of Sinaloa being one of my favorite places. Culiacan is known for its heroin trade - but if you aren't involved, you aren't in danger.

I love New Orleans, Jamaica, etc and have never had a problem with any of these places.

In my 20's thru my late 40's (I got married at 48) I traveled the world mostly independently and feel very fortunate that I have a full passport rather than a house full of kids - what I learned was fairly simple: don't judge a country or its people by horrible news statistics and stay away from no-go areas which honestly, any local will clue you in on. The other rule of thumb was not to be an entitled American...

The world is a dangerous place - but living in the US in the shadow of so much gun violence is no better. See the world, live life and leave a gentle footprint.

I'm always a bit suspicious of "top xx" lists. I'd be much more comfortable walking around some of these cities than Colon, Panama, or Port of Spain, Trinidad.

I am with sailorboy1 on this one. These numbers are not only useless, they are misleading. Any cop will tell you it's not the city but the location within the city and the time of day that are relevant. Wander a poor ghetto at night you are wearing a target whether in Rio, NYC, St Louis or Jamaica. If. like me you fear street crime, then stay out of dubious situations. After all, how many of you have ever heard of an armed robbery or a murder involving strangers in a marina anywhere in the world?

2 weeks ago, Place ,, Marigot French side of St Marteen, location, Port la Royale Marina Boulevard, 2 local individuals gun in hand ask for personal laptops and cash, they run away in a scooter before Police show up, no one hurt.... just saying...

To be fair to Brazil it is not all doom and gloom .We have spent the last two years cruising in that lovely country and never once felt threatened . It is the same old story , don't wander around in areas of certain cities without doing your homework first . Be aware of your surroundings at all times . The locals will be the first to warn you if you start heading into areas that they feel are unsafe. I am a sixty year old South African and have spent considerable time in all the SA cities mentioned on this list and have so far survived without incident . It is all about being streetwise.
