Stewart,

We are subscribers to the US DAN Travel Assist [i.e., medical evacuation and other related] service [this is NOT insurance...]

From the above link:

Quote:
[DAN] TRAVEL ASSIST

+1-919-684-9111
If outside the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, British or U.S. Virgin Islands, call +1-919-684-9111 collect.

When you join DAN, you are automatically enrolled in DAN's travel assistance plan and your family is covered with your family membership. If you travel at least 50 miles/80 km from your permanent residence, TravelAssist is there to help 24 hours a day. DAN TravelAssist arranges emergency medical evacuations for any medical emergency - and provides many more benefits - for you and your immediate family members.

IMPORTANT: DAN TravelAssist must arrange ALL evacuations. If you make your own emergency evacuation arrangements DAN TravelAssist will not reimburse the cost... [More on website]
We think this service is very reasonable and a no-brainer at $59US/year for up to 5 family members. [But it is not medical insurance!...]

In the US DAN also offers SCUBA dive and trip related insurance policies as well, but we don't currently subscribe to any of those.

Thankfully we have never had to use the service, but have read several published accounts of sailors who have and were very pleased with the [sometimes life saving] results in remote corners of the world.

We have DAN Travel Assist phone# stickers on the insides our various first aid kits, carry the DAN card with our insurance cards, and have provided DAN and health insurance details to the individuals who will receive the COSPAS-SARSAT validation phone calls [and others...] should we ever set-off an EPIRB, PLB, or other registered SOS device.

It is important to remember that if DAN doesn't make the medical evac arrangements you will be paying for them yourself.

Best wishes finding what you are looking for.

Bill

Re: DAN medical insurance

We made a claim and was denied for the following. Should have read the fine print. If you're not on a "trip" no insurance.

TRIP means:
A period of round-trip travel at least 100 miles away from
Home to your designated vacation destination associated
with the purchase of this insurance, excluding regular
commuting and local travel; the purpose of the Trip is
business or pleasure and is not to obtain health care or
treatment of any kind; the Trip has defined departure and
return dates specified; the Trip does not exceed 31 days in
length; or

A period of one-way travel that starts in the U.S. or Canada
(except U.S. citizens may begin their Trip outside the U.S.,
if returning to the U.S.); the purpose of the Trip is business
or pleasure and is not to obtain health care or treatment of
any kind; the Trip has defined departure and arrival dates
and defined departure and arrival places specified when
you apply; and the Trip does not exceed 31 days in length.

What part of the definition of "trip" did you violate to cause the denial of claim? If long term cruising I would speculate the 31 day limit would be the problem and would be for a lot of cruisers.

Which DAN insurance did you purchase. I don't see these terms in the DAN annual dive insurance.
