need help estimating distance

I'm new to this site and hope I am posting appropriately. in the summer of '67, our family traveled from Jefferson Beach Marina on Lake St. Clair to Tobermory Ontario at the tip of Georgian Bay. We harbored for a night at Port Sanilac, MI, crossed the lake, and then went north along the Canadian coast from there. Can anyone estimate for me the distance we traveled? Dad was a charter boat captain who really understood charting but I never asked and am at a loss now. thanks in advance for your consideration.

Hi Sundowner,

You can use Google Earth or the free online version of Navionics for this.

To use Navionics go to the link below.
https://webapp.navionics.com/#boating@5&key=mewgGdhcuN

Select Route > Manual>

Select a starting point Jefferson Beach

Select several waypoints in the St. Clair River

Select End Point Tobermory, Ontario

In the upper left corner you will see that this route is 211.5 nautical miles

Re: need help estimating distance

Sundown,

I make it about one hundred eighty nautical miles without the twists and turns that one makes in the river etc.

You must have fond memories.

Cheers

Good catch Ansley!

It looks like the online version of Navionics defaulted to (statute) miles and not nautical miles.

211.5 statute miles = 184 nautical miles

This can be easily altered,

From the bottom of the Navionics homepage find
Route|Menu

select;

Menu
Settings
Units

If you want to learn to do this for yourself, I use Open CPN to figure stuff like this out. It's easier than pointing off distances and adding them up, on paper charts.
