MapTech ForSale

What ever you are thinking, it may be time to move. The hiers of the founder are getting rid of MapTech. It is not clear if it will be a complete sale or broken up and parts sold. What doesn't sell will be trashed.

What ever happens to Maptech, RNCs and ENCs will live on

Neither NOAA ENCs or RNCs are going away. Who NOAA out sources the digital production to may change (currently Maptech for RNCs). ENCs are certainly the future with the numerous advantages over RNCs. Any marine navigation application (that is not freeware) should support both free non proprietary formats.

Yes, Im sure the electronic charts will live on. As you say, they are the present and tbe near future. The CD may not survive is what I meant.

Retcoastie, Our search has ended. I just spoke with Maptech and their inland river charts ARE in raster BSB-4 format.

Keep in mind SeaClear does NOT support raster files in BSB-4 format. Purhaps, I'll have to break down and spend some boat bucks on a good chart program.

Daddy

Well, bummer..... I guess that street is a dead end.

I'm still searching for a program to convert PDF files to JPG. There is one for Photoshop. Unfortunately, Photoshop is on the computer I have in storage. If it looks promising, I will get that set out and see about inputing that way.

If you're interested, I have the Tennessee River in WCI now with 4 or 5 reference points per chart. They look real good in DR. I could, perhaps, send you the ones you would be using from Tenn-Tom to the Ohio, if you think they would be useful.

I'm not giving up until the weather gets better and sailing beckons.

Retcoastie, I went ahead and ordered the Map DVD. It does come with a program that will work with the maps and supportd GPS.

Wouldn't it be nice if it supported AIS and radar overlay too.

While, I would like to have the WCI files, I think I'll hold off until I get this DVD and see what I can do with it.

I'll be letting you know.

OpenCPN

Hello All...

I'm Dave, the author of OpenCPN.

I'm sorry some have had trouble with installing and using the program.
It is still in active development, with lots of known and unknown bugs.
We try not to release a version that crashes or hangs up under "normal"
use, but obviously you have had problems.

We are seriously looking for active users willing to provide specific
feedback on installation and usage problems. Specific bugs can be corrected
in days, usually. Please contact me off-list if you would like to help.

We are committed to bringing OpenCPN up to world-class standard. The
object is not to displace the many fine commercial products available, but to
enable a viable Open Source alternative usable by real cruisers. OpenCPN
will never be (and can never be) a commercial product.

Personal note: Just returned from annual winter Bahamas cruise. I'm in
culture shock at Palm Beach, FL. Back in the developement saddle now.
We are full-time cruisers with frequent WiFi communications.

Dave,

You might want to start a new thread on OpenCPN. There may be several others that would like to participate.

Off hand I found enough problems right away that kept from doing anything.

1. The install will only install to C:\program files even though it lets you change the directory. It wants an INI file in C:\Program files instead of where you actually installs itself.

2. Adding directories to the map library crashes the program as it scans. This includes the directory you create with the files supplied. My guess is it related to the installation problems.

3. It really does not follow good Windows installation practices and writing to the program files directory makes it a bit difficult as well under Vista. You should at least let the user install any place they like and keep the INI file there instead of where you assume it to be.

I have to assume your problems right now are largely due to the poor deployment design.

Retcoastie..... I ordered Maptech's $49.95 Map CD and have been playing with it. They had told me over the phone before ordering it that it came in BSB4 format. It arrived in BSB3 format. I'm guessing the page I ordered this from still has some older CD's or perhaps this is the reason for the low price.

It comes with a lot of the inland river charts in BSB format and is readable with SeaClear II. It does not have the Tenn-tom, Tombigbee waterway, very much of the Ohio or the Kanawha River.

But it DOES have:
The Ohio River from the Tennessee River to the Mississippi River
Mississippi River
Tennessee River
Cumberland River
Illinois Waterway
Savannah River
Mohawk River
Hudson River
Some if not all of the New York State Canal System
The Great Lakes and a lot of smaller connected Lakes up around the Great Lakes.

Again they are in BSB 3 format and readable on Seaclear.
Here is the page I ordered it from.
