I guess that depends a little on the latitude you choose

Not correct. NZ chart publications cover the South and North Pacific to the coast of Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and California. I guess NOAA will do the rest. Not much left in the middle.

I wasn't aware that NZ offered the detail charts for French Polynesia. I don't have the bandwidth right now to search for them. Got a direct link?

Re: How often do you update your electronic charts?

Area of charting responsibility for the NZHO can be seen here Charting and coverage | Land Information New Zealand (LINZ)

If you want to check for any recent corrections for any chart anywhere you can get the UKHO NtMs.... corrections for west coast SA and central Pacific ( any lat ) are few and far between.

https://www.admiralty.co.uk/maritime.../low-bandwidth

https://www.admiralty.co.uk/Cumulati...%28B%29-17.pdf

For any global area or any chart... just follow the NtMs and you will know of anything *of relevance to you* soon enough.

NZ seems to have detail charts for a number of small island nations in southern central Pacific area but so far as I can see they have no detail charts of French Polynesia. (Almost certainly no detail charts of the American coasts either - just charts to get you there.)

That's what I figured. For a cruiser that wants free charts it is still the CM93 download that is floating around. Hopefully more countries will follow the US and NZ lead.
