Android AIS App

I know there are lots of Android AIS apps out there, but has anyone had GREAT success with a particular app?? Also, I've seen a few apps that transmit your own boat ais info, as well as receive AIS from other vessels (including CPA info, Vessel Name, etc.). Do these work independently of the 'internet' or cell phone coverage?? (i.e. offshore between eastern Florida coast and the Abacos- our primary cruising area.) Any suggestions appreciated.

AIS signals are VHF transmissions, so smartphones won't receive or transmit them directly. There may be some apps that will send your data to the internet somewhere, for display on sites like marinetraffic.com...


But if you're right next to me, I won't see your info on my AIS display. And I'm not monitoring internet sites like marinetraffic.com when underway.

To see, you want an AIS receiver and then you plug it into your Android (USB or wifi).

To see and be seen, you want a class B AIS transceiver. There is at least one that has a fine App coming with it. You will see and be seen then.
