Re: Advice for ICW/Caribbean Trip?

Hey CF friends! I can't believe it's been since February since I posted here...

My GF and I are in Ohio prepping the boat, and hope to untie the dock lines in 10 days

For those that asked, we set up a blog and have been trying to document things as we go...We're calling it Operation: Tropication

Check it out!

Nice to hear you're about to get going. It's getting cold!! Good luck and fair winds. Or good motoring till you get to NY City.

Ohio?

Let me remember my USA geography...

Origon
Oklahoma
Omaha.... Dang!
Ahhhh Ohio, there is is...

Its mid september now and you are not leaving till late September... You are gunna have cold weather blowing your butt about. I was in Norfolk at the end of September and had to escape south real quick.

So, depending on your supply of warm jackets you can move fast southwards to keep warm.

Keep us posted!

Yep, time to shove off matey! It's going to be a cold trip down the eastern seaboard, and you really want to be hoping there will be no delays in the canals....lock issues, whatever. It is a real pretty trip for sure, but it is time to toss your lines off the dock!

Enjoy! Maybe we'll see you down in the sunny south!

Yep, left Annapolis in October and there was ice on the docks in the am. Got pasted bad south of Hatteras also. Time to head out! Boat work is so much more fun in FLorida!

Too cold?!?!?
The NY canal system is open into Nov, so it can't be too cold yet. And fwiw, the bulk of the snowbirds leave the Chesapeake in Oct for the migration south (after the Annapolis boat show).

Sounds good to me! But first they have to get south and do the boat work where they can buy boat parts!!

Friends of ours were stuck in the canal system last year for 3 weeks.....they did the ICW with frost on the decks, cold sailing, not nice.

All I'm saying is it's mid September, they are still on Lake Erie...it's time to get moving! Besides, as mentioned, it's much more fun working on the boat where it's warm...ie Florida, or points further south! And to make it to the boat show in Annapolis....it's time to get moving! Yeehaw!

Great blog!

Yes it's already too cold. Many snowbirds used to have to be north of Cape Henry (Norfolk) till November 1st because of insurance restrictions but I understand that may have been relaxed now as the insurers are afraid of a bunch of boats gathered at the bottom of the Chesapeake and then comes a hurricane. In any event the OP, being in Ohio needs to get moving fast. It's not uncommon to get frost and slippery decks in the Chesapeake in late October.

Another factor is that, although the Canal is supposed to be open till November there are no guarantees. A lot of water late in the season can close it in a wink. Last season a buddy who has headed south for the last ten years missed the opening (or got caught by the closing) and had to haul the boat for the winter.
