I am hoping if it’s holding at sustained 40kts, it is set?

My Fortress anchor works that way, just driving deeper and deeper, pulling more and more chain underground.

Interesting.

My prior anchor was a plow. It also never buried up to the shackle.

IMO the Fortress buried 6' to 10' below the seabed is better than an anchor w/ the shank above the seabed.

My expectation is that the anchor is set and that the anchor will hold.

My electronics has an optional anchor alarm, w/ an adjustable radius. If yours also has that feature then this is a good time to enable that alarm.

I got the anchor alarm set and I am outside watching the shore and the windspeed.

Is it absurd to fear the 1/4” G4 chain or the 8-strand nylon rode could snap?

The anchor should hold okay, CQR's are okay in sand and with all that weight of chain out as well odds are in your favour.
Soon be dawn and things always look better in day light, hang in there..

Re: What to do if anchor drags?

Those are not the weak points. An intact chain, proper splice and solid rope will not break.

The shackle must also be solid.

I also have a laplink in the chain that I grossly regret getting at the moment. Other parts are all good but you know what they say.. the weakest link!!

Anyway, the upside is that I will not fear 30 kts at anchor anymore now that I have seen what its like at 40s.

Re: What to do if anchor drags?

By this point, if you haven’t dragged, you’re likely fine. Just watch out for wind shifts. You’re likely well dug in on this wind pattern, but if it comes around on you, watch to make sure the anchor doesn’t pop out.

Another thing to consider is yaw; if your boat sails around a lot at anchor then trying to slow or stop this is a good way to limit extremes on the anchor. I’ve used a stern anchor at times to do this, but be careful of fouling rudder or prop.

There is a lot of yaw, 90 degrees or so. You can also see from the GPS trace that it sails a bit. However the only other anchor I have is the flimsy dinghy anchor which I do not believe would do much. Should I try? It has 45 feet of nylon line.

Re: What to do if anchor drags?

Sounds like you will make it and being close to land I dont expect there are too many large swells lifting the bow periodically .
The first thing to do tho is to ditch that rubbish plow and buy one of the modern super holding anchors .
Then you can get some sleep.

I use Rocnar but know there are others to match it .
I inherited a cqr once and straight away replaced it with a Rocnar .
I dragged that plow 5000 miles in the locker , thinking a spare mbe until one day I got it in the dinghy and gifted it to a Sea Gypsey on an island in the Andaman Sea .
His boat was only 20 ft long .
