.....for a dinghy? So many to choose from. What's your pick? Why?

4Lb Bruce Copy. Because it works well for its small size and weight. Cheap too.

Re: Best Anchor Ever.....

Mantus makes a great dinghy anchor that is very high quality, looks great and is CHEAP. Comes with a rode and SS shackle. New gen anchor holds as good or better than anything else.

Re: Best Anchor Ever.....

D,
A dinghy anchor needs to be small, lightweight and easily deployed. We have used an inexpensive Danforth 3.5 lbs with 1/4" hi-test chain and about 30 feet of 1/2"(overkill) 3 strand line for over 20 years in our Avon 9.3 with great success. We have never needed to anchor in water over 3-4 feet and usually pull the dink ashore if there is a beach. However, if you pull your dink ashore, be certain to deploy/bury your anchor further ashore(away from the water) since a rising, then falling tide will carry away an unanchored dinghy out to sea as happened to us once in the Marquesas. I had a very uneasy swim to retrieve it in very sharky water. Defender sells a 3.5 lb. hot dipped galvanized anchor for $28.99 Good luck and safe sailing.

Re: Best Anchor Ever.....

Anyone have trouble with the pointy bits on an anchor in their inflatable dinghy? I bought a folding grapnel for my air floor dink so no points when folded, but it's a lousy anchor. A small Danforth type would be better but awkward to stow and use on this dinghy.

A very small Fortress (Fx 7?) with a metre of 3/8 chain.

When I was testing dinghy anchors for a mag these were so bad I didn't even bother to wade over to them to pick them up. It was easier to just pull it to me.

My favorite was the Mantus Dinghy in galv. I understand they are updating the design. too. Second would be either Guardian G-5 (very strong) or the Claw 2kg (cheap, easy, no sharp points). Forget chain, it's a pain; the load is only 10-20 pounds and it is not going to cut a 3/8" rode. (FWIW, I like all-chain rode on bigger boats)

This is the dinghy anchor I use. I understand the lousy anchor statement; however, this suits me well for the occasions that I anchor my dinghy.

1- 'carried to shore to plant in the sand or behind a rock or log,- excellent.
2- 'holding the stern out while the bow is tied ashore or to a dock,- adequate.
3- 'keeping the dinghy in place over sand or mud in a chop or swell,- fails!

When I'm in need with the #3 scenario it's usually because we're snorkeling and I can dive to plant the grapnel in a secure place.

95% of my dinghy anchor needs are with numbers 1 or 2 in flat water.

Re: Best Anchor Ever.....

I have one of these:

Mushroom Anchor - 8 Lbs

I'd say it's best asset is... not being pointy.

(It does seem to do the trick.)
