Mouse your shackles! I lost a 6 month old Rocna 25kg anchor due to the shackle coming undone. It was moused with a standard 8" zip-tie, but both the shackle and zip tie (split in half) were on my deck and the anchor was gone. I now have my new anchor moused with Monel wire I got years ago from West Marine.

Re: Anchor Shackle

How could the shackle and zip tie be on your deck and the anchor gone, unless somebody stole it?

After struggling with the anchor to get it aboard with the windlass, we got it up on the roller and started towards the safety of the moorings. When I went to the bow to tie the anchor's hoop to the pulpit like I always do, the anchor shackle had come undone and the anchor had fallen over board. I saw the anchor come up and sit in the roller... Less than a minute after, it was gone and the shackle/ zip-tie were all that was left. Somehow, it snipped the zip-tie and unscrewed the shackle.... Maybe it was a mermaid playing tricks on us!

Re: Anchor Shackle

Heck I make one trip a year to the west coast, just to replace my Anchor goodies!! Galvie chain and shakles, monel wire(it's stillout there if ya look) and any other things needed to safely sleep at night ! I find if I go the Fishermans supply stores, to buy my anchor gear, I save enough to pay for the trip! I go in our 1 ton PU, and come home with all I need ! I never use swivels on my anchor chains. Ive seen to many broken ones! I use 1 shakle safety wired and peaned on the end! Ive broken the flukes on a anchor, and still pulled the remaining peaces with the shakle and wire still there!! Theres no reason not to spend the time to safety wire anything that needs it!! It's just part of sailing and being ship shape ! just my 2 cents

Re: Anchor Shackle

I agree with barnakiel regarding the Wichard HR shackles. They are forged and stretch/deform before breaking and have much higher breaking strength than HT chain.

For example, we've used the 15/32" pin shackle on our 5/16" chain for years. Breaking strength about 21,000lb...

That is just weird--Neptune wanted some tribute for letting you go.
