No I would never put the boats name on the Dink.
We call ours 'Lil Dink and have painted her name large and glowing

It just makes it too obvious for crooks as to which boat is vacant while the people are off shopping etc.

well i guess i am sorta a trusting, glass half full type. with the t/t name on the dink, an honest person will able to return the dink when it runs away on you (panter breaks). But then again, I named my dink chubby, that's the tranlation Polunu.

I purchased an 8ft. Livingston dinghy named "Crumb" from a person with a mothership named "Bread and Butter".

In the USN and USCG the boats the ships carry are named with the first three letters of the ship's name and then a number (1,2,3). For example Stennis would have it's boats named: Ste 1 Ste 2, etc. As far as state registration goes: if it has a motor of any kind it must have numbers. I can't find out right now if there is a maximum size non-powered boat that would need numbers. This would be a state by state regulation. For example: Texas, a sailboat without propulsion 14 feet and longer needs numbers.

With no intent to "hyjack" the thread (something I hate when others do it), however with an ancillary thought I've personally seen work:

If it is all possible, have a second inflatable dink (eg. a roll-up inflatable) on board. You would be surprised how many times it will come in handy for short-quick trips to a neighbouring yacht, and/or when you have guests aboard.

However, a primary purpose for it is to have it tied to your stern when you go ashore for any length of time in your primary dink. Theives rarely board yachts that have a dink tied to their stern, they just motor-on-by....

No doubt there will be many that will find all sorts of reasons to reject this idea, however I know it works. I've purchased a new 3.1m Walker-Bay Genesis, but will keep my old 2.3m inflatable (which has the mother ship's name BUT written inside on the transon) for the above reasons mentioned ... especially for the anti-theft one.

I suspect, though I am by no means certain, you could risk naming your dink after your mother ship ... though I would do so in the manner my old dink has it.

Two theories:

If traveling where dingy theft is an issue - put no name on it. Go out of your way to paint it or patch it to look older, but not stick out. Secure with the thickest cable you can and good lock

If traveling where dingy security is not an issue - have it stand out, put your boat name on it. If lost will be more easily found and returned. People will hopefully feel funny about hanging onto a dinghy that clearly belongs to another mother ship.

Of course most people travel where both issue may be true at various time.

One could also just go without journeys to shore and skip the dinghy option all together. That land stuff always makes me kind of nervous anyways.
