What measurement to take to determine pole length

Hi,

I would like to be able to pole out my working jib (yankee) so that I can have a wing-and-wing set up with the poled out genoa. The inner forestay with the jib is immediately behind the forestay (i.e. a "Solent stay" not a cutter rig).

Can anyone tell me what I need to measure in order to determine what length the pole for the jib should be?

The ideal pole length depends on the angle to the wind, but typically a whisker pole should be the same length as the foot of the sail.
