Greg,
If you're going to re rig have you considered synthetic replacement for shrouds and stays? Some swear by it. Saves weight aloft, seems to be stronger and may cost less. Dave

The bottom half which connects to a the chainplate via a toggle has a 3/8" threaded stud that screws into the top half. Is this a common construction practice and does it have the same strength as the rest of the stay? At first I thought this was a "Rube Goldberg fix", but after careful examination it was really designed that way. See pics:
