replacing cable stay end ?

Does anyone manufacture a new cable stay end that reaches above the existing cable end and attaches to the noncoroded area of cable. when the only evidence of corosion is down in the original cable end ? There has to be a better way than replacing it completly.

Can you be specific. What exactly is the purpose of this “cable” and what is the “cable end”. Ambiguous terms make it difficult to offer sound advice.

Sorry not to familiar with the rigging terms. It is the mast cable leading down to the port side at the end, down inside the end it is showing enough corosion
where he fears a failure. But down to the fitting the cable looks fine. Is there a fitting that could reach up to good cable and retrofit his end without rerigging.
The boat is not worth it.

Look at the wire which you call cable. If it is all bright and shiny that's good. If it is candy caned, alternating light and dark then replace it. It only "looks" good, it is probably not.

If it is not worth making it seaworthy, then scrap it and buy one that is. I'd be concerned that other fittings are corroding as well, such as those at the top of the mast that can't easily be inspected or the chain plates.

To add to this. The wire itself is cheap. The fittings are expensive. If replacing one fitting but not the wire breaks the budget then perhaps sailing a boat larger than a dinghy isn’t currently in the cards.

If the wire is good it is pretty simple.


Cut the wire, have a new swage fitting put on and add some toggles to make up for the shorter length. Probably the cheapest, although not the prettiest, way to do it.

If the OP is having problems with one stay, I would replace all of them.

Going cheap on the rigging is a great way to lose the mast if not the whole boat and crew.

Maintaining the engine and keeping the standing rigging in good condition only makes sense.
