Need New Main Halyard

Have a Tayana 37. I think the main is about 270sf. Need a new halyard. Any suggestions? I'm thinking 1/2 - 5/8 in.
Samson MLX, New England?

As always, thanks for any input.

Re: Need New Main Halyard

Seems very unlikely t hat the sheaves in the masthead box are big enough for 5/8 inch halyards. With MLX, 1/2 would be overkilll IMO, and 3/8 or 10 mm more the go. Lower friction, too.

FWIW, we use 10 mm spectra core double braid for the main halyard on our boat, mainsail is ~600 sq ft.

Re: Need New Main Halyard

Changed to 7/16" dacron/exotic core braided halyard for ease of handing. Way overkill for strength. Used to have a 3/8"/10mm similar spec. line and it worked fine but got a deal on the larger 7/16"/11mm so went with it. Main is 270 sq. ft.

Even if I wasn't using the exotic line and had StaSet X, VPC or even straight old dacron, would not go larger than 7/16".

Re: Need New Main Halyard

I never go less than 7/16 because older hands need something a bit more substantial to grasp. After several days at sea the larger diameter halyards are comforting....that may be age related also

Just go with 10mm VPC. It's strong enough, it's low enough stretch, and it's priced right. It's what I just replaced my main halyard with and I'm vary happy with it.
