I had the joy of working on Dorade. A beautiful yacht. One of the original vents with the boats name on it was kept on the wall in Vic Franks shop for many years.

They were carried by ships much earlier. I came to Canada on an old hog islander, built in 1919, and it has a TON of them.

Avb3, I think it might have been the box with the baffle in it to stop water intrusion that was Olin Stephens' contribution to the ventilation device, not the cowls seen in the picture above.
