Dutchman for staysail

We have a loose footed staysail on a boom. When it drops it creates a mess of the bow and increases the time spent up there unnecessarily.

Has anyone used a dutchman for a staysail? Is this even a good idea?

Don't see how Dutchman Flaking would work. We have our staysail on roller furling

I'm not going to switch out to a furler there are too many advantages to a boom. Why would you say it would not work? In what way will it not work?

A Dutchman system needs a topping lift. If you have that it will probably work. Call them to be sure.

Yes, we have a topping lift. We have all the features of a mainsail boom... slab reefing, outhaul, cunningham, traveller, etc... the only thing we lack is a boom vang, which would actually be very useful.

Not that we have ever reefed it... but if we were to reef it the advantage is that is moves the COE down to the deck rather than out towards the bow like a roller furler.

We can also use the boom as a secondary lift point for man overboards, as a mechanism for backing the sail, as a boom tent spline, a great place to hang laundry, etc.

Zboss, I have the Dutchman system on my mainsail and I'm very happy with it. I also have a boomed staysail with hanks. I too have to gather in the staysail on the foredeck when dropped. I have seen roller furlers on boomed staysails and that is certainly one option.

I don't know your set up but on mine the staysail topping lift is nearly vertical so Dutchman lines would not lead down properly from it. It would require, I think, a line running parallel to the staysail stay for the Dutchman lines to drop down vertically.

Have you contacted Dutchman? I would think they have a solution.

Yea, I suppose the lines would need to be more vertical. Our staysail doesn't go all the way up the stay do I suppose you could have at least one ur two wires go above the head of the sail.

I'll call Dutchman... Maybe the do have a solution.
