Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

Has anyone tried to start a high efficiency 1.5 HP electric motor with the new Honda EU 2200?

You8're going to have trouble if the 1.5 HP motor requires higher voltage than the 13 v the Honda generates

Also I understand from this guy who made his own watermaker that the Honda generators can't run a single-capacitor motor so he had to get a dual capacitor one for his DIY watermaker (ffwd to 10:55)

The new Honda EU2200 has a 121cc engine and the old EU2000 had a 100cc engine. The new generator is rated 10% more than the old version.

Re: Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

I have a 1/2 hp well pump (120 volt, line start, under load) that a EU2000 will barely start providing the gen is not in the economy mode. Wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for 1.5 HP. Maybe unloaded motor and help from inverter.

Re: Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

The older EU2000 would start a leeson 1 HP watt saver motor under load. I wonder if an electric clutch was used on the high pressure pump and the motor was stared before engaging the clutch if it would start the 1.5 HP motor. The clutch could be mounted on the engine or high pressure pump.

Use a slow start control.

Re: Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

When you start a watermaker you can have the bypass round the pressure control valve open, so the motor should only be lightly loaded.

Re: Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

It’s the start current (in amps) that’s going to be your problem, not necessarily voltage.
While I think the 1.5 hp motor is too big for the gen, a hard start kit, as used on air conditioners, provides a great boost on marginally adequate generators.
Seawater Pro Watermakers claims their 21gph WM will run on a Honda EU 2000.
This WM is only $1495, has anyone had any experience with their units?

Our rainman 30 GPH is run regularly on our 2013 EU2000i companion. I don’t know what size HP motor it uses.

Google says 3.5 HP*rated, so call it 3

Re: Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

Rainman AC systems use a 1.5hp motor and start with a Honda 2kva generator. This is true for both our 230V/50Hz and our 115V/60Hz systems. I don't know if you can extrapolate that to mean the Honda will start all 1.5hp motors though.

Sorry, this is the rating of the Honda genny's gasoline motor.

I see now I misunderstood the question.

Re: Honda EU2200 and Watermakers

A rule of thumb is that it takes 3 times the rated operating power of an induction motor not starting under load with no special starting circuitry. So a 2200 VA genset should be expected able to run up to a 1hp motor, or so, in these circumstances.
