Generic Watermaker membranes

Some time ago, a member posted a website for reasonably priced RO membranes (I was searching for an alternative to paying Katadyn’s king’s ransom for an old PUR). In the end, I decided to just dump the PUR since Katadyn no longer supports PUR machines beyond selling expensive membranes.

As luck would have it, I deleted the website a month ago and today my dock neighbor asked about a source for membranes.

Anyone have a source?

Thanks.

Re: Generic Watermaker membranes

Filmtec is a division of Dow. They make all the desalination membranes. There are many dealers.

Be sure you are buying desalinating membranes, and then the diameter and length are the only variables.

Applied Membranes in Vista California rolls their own membranes to match the "screw you" special size requirements of Parker/Village Marine/HRO

Here is their sales site

Re: Generic Watermaker membranes

Amazon or ebay are the best places I've found for membranes and filters, both generic and brand name.

Unfortunately, as far as I know at this point, the PUR/Katadyn membranes are only made by Katadyn and yes they are proprietary and pricey.

I can assure you that Katadyn is not a big enough company to be manufacturing their own R/O membranes. The sizes and fittings sure look like a match for standard Dow Filmtec membranes.

Are you SURE they are proprietary? Or do they just tell you to "only use genuine, etc, etc."

Spectra is now owned by Katadyn, and I KNOW those are industry standard membranes.

Made by, and have made for them, to their specifications are different, but in effect the same, as it’s sole sourced.
So your probably right, they don’t actually make them, but the people that do, won’t sell to you.
