Does TSA allow a Watermaker membrane in checked baggage?

Has anyone tried to carry a new watermaker membrane on an airplane in checked baggage? I know that a new membrane needs to be kept in its liquid-filled container until it is installed in the boat. Will TSA allow this specific liquid and its container on board? Has anyone had experience, good or bad, flying with a watermaker membrane? If so, please name the airline when you describe your experience.

Re: Does TSA allow a Watermaker membrane in checked baggage?

There's no problem checking any watermaker parts through TSA on checked baggage. I transported a complete Spectra 380c including the membrane and membrane tube three months ago from Boston, through England, Barcelona and then onto Olbia. The liquid filled container isn't exactly a liquid filled container. Both times we transported new membranes to Europe, they were shipped in a long plastic bag with only the membrane saturated with the liquid solution. TSA opened the cardboard outer box, and allowed the inner plastic bag containing the membrane to go through. Might not be a bad idea to provide a written product description inside the box so the inspector knows what it is.

I carry them all the time on the airlines, usually Delta. But I have been stopped several times to explain what it is. They do raise an eyebrow or two on a TSA agent that pays attention. Most of them never ask.

Yep, the only thing you don't want to say is "Sodium Metabisulfite"...if they ask what the moisture in the bag is, just way membrane preservative. Or they will want to see a MSDS.

Have taken 21inch membranes in carry on baggage Miami to Heathrow. Even managed a couple of Ronstan backstay insulators but TSA man was initially a little unsure about them.
