27' Sea Ray Sundancer (1992)

Hey folks. I'm going with a buddy to check out a power boat and was wondering if I could get any relevant opinions on these. We're doing a sea trial on it and after that if he's still interested we'll do a proper engine and hull survey.

But beyond all that, just looking for any opinions.

It has a gasoline MercCruiser 454 engine, for whatever that's worth.

I had an 89 21 sea ray for a while. it was a good boat and sea ray has a pretty good reputation. I like them but the price seems to be on the high side hopefully the condition reflects the price.

No, Sea Ray has a GREAT reputation. I always liked the Sundancer. Their a great size for the Great Lakes and seem to run forever. I'm not sure what you would find with a hull survey. Just look at it. With the age of the boat, most likely it is what it is. More issues are with the outdrives then the motor generally.

Re: 27' Sea Ray Sundancer (1992)

I'm a Sea Ray fanatic, and a purely rank amateur on design and quality.
I just know what I like.

Sea Rays tend to have 800 to 1000 lbs more glass in their hulls than equivalent builders.
Excellent fit and finish and rigging.

They get on plane faster with less engine effort and higher economy cruising speeds have been my observations from ownership compared to friends 4 Winns or other brands of the same size.
Not knocking other brands, I'd love to own any of them, just my reason I drop cash on the Sea Rays.
New one due from the factory in Knoxville in May.

Service record is everything IMHO, and like another forum poster mentioned, the outdrives may be the Achilles heel.

Liquid cooled generators tend to not have heat exchangers, so if it's equipped & has been a salt water boat at any time, the generators engine will eventually be due for a change-out.

Easy change out. The motors, separate from the generator are like a Buggs and Strap on lawnmower engine. Ya pull away the accessories, controls and hoses and four bolts, reverse the procedure with the new motor and it's a done deal. Usually done with the unit in place and in an hour or two.

I'd pay the $$ to have a marine surveyor give it a bill of health.
Just my unqualified opinion , and free advise is worth what ya paid for it.
