Let's go over this again real slow.

On the Pacific side of the US we are a LEESHORE. For centuries the sea has banged against the coastline creating cliffs and rocky shores. When something dire happens to imped the forward motion of a boat it tends to drift with the direction of the wind and sea, ergo toward the rocky shore.

This condition, for the most part, does not happen on the East coast of the US.

The NC coastline is dangerous...with very few shelters to duck to. Lots of crazy eddies and boatie on sandy beeech is as bad a rock. Hence ICW is most courses...

Gulf stream + Northern winds and you will be peeing in no time.

That said...heading south - either inside closer to shore (say comin from VA, or out - WAAAAAAAY OUT

Awright, sumpthin for EVERYone....

John - we DO have lee shores in NC. Way fewer rocks, though. A couple of years ago, a man and his son died on the rock jetty coming out of Masonboro Inlet - engine failure and a lee shore, never had the chance to gain distance.

Sara - I don't dispute your numbers, but further ain't always better. Far enough is just right, and everyone's yardstick is different.

SaltyMonkey - the Graveyard of the Atlantic is those shoals offshore. In another thread there was talk about the danger of Cape Hatteras. The point there, as here, is - stay out where the water is thick.

Boatman - as stated, further ain't always better. But ya can't steal second with your foot on first.

By and large, I agree with the numbers suggested. Daytime in local calm waters, I'll venture to within 1/4 mile of shore, BUT it's shallow enough to anchor in a nice sandy bottom. Normally on a coastal passage, I'll keep 2 - 5 miles even when the wind is parallel to the coastline (common here with prevailing s/sw breezes). But when I have to work to stay offshore, 20, 30, 40 miles is more my cushion.

Sympatico and I have not even been out there yet, so I need some time to get to know her ways.
