Re: Sunset Lake article in Miami Herald

Yep, the article put the home owners side very strongly.

That can be the trouble with calling in the media. They can then run their own story.

They sell papers to the home owners, not the cruisers.

This is a Florida paper and its not easy for it to back an Out-of-towner when that person swears twice in one quote and slags off the papers readership!:
“We don’t get this kind of crap in states north of Florida,” he said. “People in Florida seem to have an attitude of ‘I’ve got my piece of paradise and everybody else can piss off.’ ”

In all it appears the cruisers are out of touch with the local community and that position is backed by legislation and future legislation.

Hate to say it, but this looks like a loss in the media campaign.

Media is very difficult to deal with and thats why professional publicists make big money.

The wash-up of this article is that the home owners will feel vindicated about the stereos and lights to disturb cruisers.

I'm not 'blaming' anyone, its just the media is a double edge sword and needs a deft hand.... very deft.

Far as I'm concerned the homeowners won in the article. I'm not surprised at all and would expect a local paper to side with the locals. I'm a little surprised of how scared some of the homeowners are of boaters!

Re: Sunset Lake article in Miami Herald

I keep wondering what part of "You don't own the water" they keep missing.

As an aside, I see how real estate developers handle things here in Toronto. One developer builds a condo advertising a water front view. It sells out and then another developer with pull at city council builds a new one between the original building and the waterfront, which he now sells as having a waterfront view. So from my point of view its just business as usual, only in this case it's boaters messing up his view. Sucks to be him.

As for the media, here's a look at how the media works. Pretty nauseating if you ask me.

Missing Milly Dowler's voicemail was hacked by News of the World | UK news | The Guardian.

This particular news paper is owned by Rupert Murdoch, one of the richest people in the world, who is bound and determined to own every news source in the world, makes sure his papers follow the correct editorial slant (his) and wants you to pay for all of the news, slanted or otherwise. A real prince.

I never saw what the big deal was about a little music and some lights.
Don't look at the lights and don't pay attention to the music

Sadly my efforts to get a recording of the call to the police that started this incident failed, that would have been an interesting phone call to hear.

As far as the lights, a mirror directing the light back at his house would probably put a stop to that and ear plugs the rest.

If these land owners are paying over $100K a year in taxes, the city knows which side of the bread the butter is on. I doubt any boater anchoring spends that much in the city, much less contributes that much in taxes to the city.

Since the article only talked about Canadian boaters getting harrassed, I do wonder what the response a disabled veteran would get if he anchored there and was harassed by the land owners.

As far as the 4th of July anchor in, the only thing we do know is that Canucksailor was not there.

That's right. I was not there, it was not possible for me to BE there - and all of that, and why, was explained in the previous thread. I am awaiting comment from the people who offered to take over the event for me, given the circumstances. When I receive that information, I'll report it here.
Sorry it took so long for this reply, but I've been underway and had no access to the net.
In the meantime, enjoy anchoring - without being hassled - in Sunset Lake, which was the whole and entire purpose of everything I did.

Here is what I think.

I think that the guys that WERE there don's owe a THING to the wankers who are pissed off at people who they THINK should have been there.

Maybe they are sworn to silence, maybe the party is still going on... what ever it is, MORE POWER TO THEM.

I gotta say that the WANKERS who have such an issue with Canucksailor probably have nothing to gain or loose in all this anyway.

Why on earth would ANYONE be upset with a fellow cruiser who is ACTUALLY out cruising, that took his time and effort to draw attention to the issue and then did not dedicate his life to being a PROP in the drama that all the internet quarterbacks are SALIVATING over the opportunity to speak poorly of, denigrate, and THEN tell us all how THEY would have done SO much better.

Really guys, get over yourselves. If you were not there, why do you feel some RIGHT to know?

I'm sure that by wankers you meant fellow members of the forum whose opinion I respectfully disagree with?

I'm not sure people are claiming a right to know but maybe a curiousity to know.

Why yes, of course. Wanker: Distinguished member of CF deserving of full respect and honor... ... thanks.

Certainly nothing wrong with being curious... The trend of slamming Canuck (for not being there) on the part of other spectators (who were not there) is rather silly IMHO.

But yes, 'wanker' is of course a greatly respectful term....

I find it entertaining that I'm actually getting grief from forum members who don't even OWN a boat, much less weren't even there.
But they're welcome to indulge in their First Amendment rights...
