Let's see 33 years in a US Federal prison or life in a **** hole like Somalia. I'll take the prison as would at least half the population of Somalia.

The topic of this thread is piracy. Leave off the discussions of war and it can stay open. The mods are nice that way

No so sure about that. There have been recent, widely reported cases of pirates being attacked and killed by the US Navy.

Just watched a piece on Sky news UK, seems the Navy have a problem, if they arrest these scumbags they could claim asylum in the UK at the end of the sentence! However, the reporter did say that in his opinion things were coming to a ¨head¨ and that the UK was running out of patience and was leaning towards harder measures!

No he won't. He gets afforded all the rights of any convicted criminal.
That means he gets a slick lawyer to argue he cannot be put into general population or he will be hurt or killed.
The next stop is then solitary confinement which is cruel and unusual punishment. Either way we have to feed, cloth, and take care of all his medical needs.
Should have just left him in the sea.

The photo was captioned:
“Federal agents escort Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse into New York City's Federal Plaza on April 20, 2009, which would be prior to his trial.
In most cases, that would be before his sentencing.

NO!!!!!!!!!!! Emphatically NO!!
These people MUST begin to realise Yemen is NOT safe! Convoys and cruisers should NOT go inside Yemeni territorial waters!
Not only are they subject to harassment by Yemini Coastguard (as happened on our convoy) but summary arrest and detention.

Coalition navies are NOT ALLOWED to enter Yemini waters if there is an incident! If you are attacked the Navy is NOT ALLOWED to help!!

Helicopters are not allowed to go rescue you in Yemini waters, either.

Please understand these points.

The convoy I was in went inside Yemini territorial waters and were fools to do so.

The IRTC is the Internationally Recognized Transit Corridor and that is the route to use. in there you are always within 20 nms or 40nms of a war ship (40 miles if the ship has a helicopter, 20 without). The corridor is 12 miles wide, 5 miles each way and a 2 mile buffer zone in the middle which the navy ships patrol. Yachts travel inside the 2 mile buffer zone with the navy ships, so you're 6 miles from the edge of the corridor, the other side of which is 5 mile outer zone. You basically have an 11 mile zone under high surveillance.

We spoke to a British navy ship in Salalah and talked with the Intelligence Office for about 2 hours, and they have realities they must deal with. ONe of them being they can't leave their post!!! Like all good soldiers they can't go wondering off to Yemen 50 nms out of their station in the IRTC.

Yes, theres a risk of being pirated inside the IRTC, but the risk is vastly higher inside Yemen and you don't have the chance of a warship and helicopter in the intermediate vicinity to interdict.

Have fun on your transit. It’s a transit people with brains don't do, and a transit even twits like me would never ever do twice.

Thanks for, both, your expertise and your self-depreciating candor.

I was thinking about the east coast of Africa anyway. Why not blow across the Indian Ocean to Madagascar with stops along the way?
Start at Christmas island, Then over to Sri Lanka by way of Indonesia, see India if you like or head down to the Maldives and on to the Chagos Archipelago, southeast to the Mauritius islands then to Reunion island.
Now you can decide on seeing Madagascar or not by way of a Northeasterly passage. Around the tip of Africa and start up the East African coast. It's a safer cheaper way to get to travel. Not to mention all the people and cultures along the way to the Mediteranian.
Just my 2 cents.
