That must be the rusty stuff the Chinese are mining now and sending to us in appliances and fittings?

Hi, Cheech,
Wonder if the technology was shared since the Vikings traded extensively with the Middle East? Interesting article. Safe sailing . . . Rognvald

Yeah, that's a thought for sure!

30yr ago in my sophomore Materials Engineering class, we already covered this phenomenon.

I assume you are referring to hardening by bending and you knew what caused it?

Work hardening has been well understood for a very long time.

Yes, I was bewildered. I know when you bend or stamp stainless steel it becomes "work hardened" (But I didn't know the molecular process involved)

Work hardening, also known as strain hardening, is the strengthening of a metal or polymer by plastic deformation. ... This strengthening occurs because of dislocation movements and dislocation generation within the crystal structure of the material.

So now we know.....

That's exactly how it was explained back in college...and it applies to most metals and alloys.

So we knew back then...

As usual, the headline is a bit misleading.

No doubt the fact and likely explanation have been known for quite some time. The article is about using a large scale supercomputer simulation to show how this happens at the atomic level, which apparently was not well understood and had not been rigorously explained.

More like, researchers trying to appear to find something AMAZING (and being misleading as a result).

They might have confirmed some stuff in a new way or in slightly greater detail but I can recall the molecular diagrams showing how it works.

I would say “Interesting Engineering”, the posted link, oversold it. I suspect if you read the actual paper in Nature Materials, it is probably not oversold.
