Re: Smoothest application of bottom paint short of spraying

Re: Wooden Hulls

As above, I don't understand the addition of carvel planking on top of the cold-moulded hull. I've never heard of this and the use of glass cloth as well? It sound as though the builder didn't trust...

Re: retirement

I'd pay someone to build me a yacht (small, around 26/27ft, cold moulded, very simple and seaworthy, maybe even no engine). I'd sponsor individuals or charities with half my income and set sail,...

Re: Why use bottom paint when you can scrape?

Why use a washing machine when you can scrub? Why use a car when you can walk? Etc.

Re: Freestanding mast opinions wanted

All I'd like to ask is why? I'm serious, it's an odd parameter for a novice to set themselves. Nothing wrong with it that I know of, it's just unusual and I'd like to hear the story behind the...

Older fibreglass boats tend to be stronger (thicker fibreglass) than newer ones and any osmosis problems sorted out. They also tend to be a bit slower and have less comfortable interiors. I'd prefer...

Re: Sail handling without winches

Rucksta, thank you for the Harken link, that was more what I was looking for rather than the pro/con thing, though the conversation is interesting! It helps to understand things from basic principles.

Re: Sail handling without winches

Thank you for your replies so far. I'm currently "between boats", last one was 34' but I'm thinking of more like 24' next time. I'm just looking at the cost of outfitting and the price of gear. The...

Re: Havsfidra Modifications and the Benefits of Small Boats

further to my last post.. if you've converted one quarter berth to a sail locker, if that had a full height bulkhead at its forward end you could hang your oilies from that, above/next to the sails....
