Re: How do I get a stainless pin out of an aluminum masthead?

If it's just a pin going through an eye, tap it with a hammer gently. At all costs, do not hit or damage the aluminium.

If that doesn't work spray thoroughly with a penetrating oil, & tap again....

Re: Refugees at Sea

Emigrants when they leave, migrants on arrival. These unfortunates didn't make it to "migrant" status, IMO.
Not that words change anything in these situations.

Re: Killer whales take the rudder...

I suspect they kill larger whales by first disabling the propulsion: i.e. fins.

Re: Changes in Tropical Cyclone Intensity & Track

It's all God's will. We can stop thinking now. No reason to do anything, as anything we do must have been ordained. Save the peadophiles, for the love of God. They only do what He asks of...

Re: Adding another hole, garboard drain plug.

It sounds like you want to put a hole in the hull because you have too much bilge water.
I know I have misunderstood something.

Re: only child

How old is your daughter, & how long the cruise?
I took 2 daughters,4 & 6 yo, on a short cruise, few months.
They enjoyed it, & also missed normal life. It was short enough to not worry about...

Re: New York Bight - Wind Energy Areas at Sea

Everything breaks sometime. Imagine the cost of a nuclear plant damaged by a natural event. The Japanese are still adding it up.

Re: New York Bight - Wind Energy Areas at Sea

Does anybody know what the non turbine structures in Montanan's pics are? Domiciles, offices, workshops? None of these thoughts make sense.

Re: 1976 Bristol 34 How serious is a separating bulkhead?

It's possible there is meant to be a gap. You mention the mast is keel stepped, so it can only stiffen the coach house. Try to study any crazing in the gelcoat: if there is none, it may be good as is.

Re: Autonomy with two 100w panels 54 amp-hour battery

For only 2-3 days away from the marina, you need only more battery, or no fridge.

Re: Is diesel-electric or all-electric the future?

The basic problem the OP identify seems to be the battery bank.

Re: 1976 Bristol 34 How serious is a separating bulkhead?

Do Bristols have a liner? Are we talking about a gap at the edge of a liner?
When a structural bulkhead rips away from the coach roof, there would be an unmistakable mess, rather than a neat gap.

Re: What are these things?

Pulpit, pushpit, any round item the right size.
They don't clamp anything, but clamp onto the rail, while holding something else at the bolt.
They are a way of bolting something to a steel tube...

Re: How sailboat leeway depends on a boat speed?

I think sails have more to do with leeway than has been discussed. hardening a sheet will decrease the forward force & increase the leeward force.
Keel forces are in reaction to the sail forces.

Re: Sailcloth

Stiffness is a benefit in working sails. So "reputation" won't be a good guide for you. Discuss your needs with your sailmaker, stressing a soft hand & the issues you didn't like in the previous sail.

Re: 1978 28' Islander Thoughts?

Looks great. Just be aware, when cruising you want everything to work properly. That can add up to a lot on an old boat. so price that in. Work out what you need , what you don't need, & price that...

Re: White powder spot in bilge area

If it dries as fast as the rest of the bilge, I would just clean it up. Investigate if it comes back.
If it seems to stay moist, investigate fully.
