Re: Repower- Torque or HP?

===

A re-power with new Yanmars will probably cost upwards of $80,000. You can buy quite a lot of fuel with that so I'd be in no hurry as long as the Perkins are in good condition and running...

Re: Open array radar on 40 footers

An open array gives better target resolution regardless of height. Resolution is important for making sense of closely spaced targets or an irregular coast line.

An alternative to a pole is...

Re: HF Radio Questions -- Atlantic Crossing

===

That is correct, all marine frequencies are USB. On the ham (amateur radio) bands it's LSB on 160, 75, and 40 meters. USB on all higher frequency bands.

Rel 5.6 Can't Upload AIS Data to Marinetraffic.com

I have been using an OpenCPN network connection to send AIS data to marinetraffic.com for many years. I recently upgraded to rel 5.6 and the data is no longer being sent even though it shows up on...

Re: Simrad AP22 control head

Have you checked on EBAY? Simrad parts show up there fairly often. That's how I keep my AP35 running. Another good source is Max Marine in Pompano Beach, FL. Max is a knowledgeable guy...

Re: Rowing across the Great Bahamas Bank

The most logical place would be east of the Ragged Islands and proceeding more or less west from there, staying fairly close to the edge of Old Bahamas Channel for the most favorable...

Re: Motor yachts for long range cruising

A good place to start is Bruce Van Sant's "A Gentleman's Guide to Passages South." We reference it all the time.

Re: Advice on offshore hops instead of the ICW

===

We frequently go offshore from Beaufort, NC to Southport via Masonoro Inlet. The inlet is deep, well marked, and safe in all normal weather conditions. This avoids the slog through or...

Re: What is this and what do I use it for?

That would be my guess. That kind of arrangement is common in marinas that are exposed to ocean swells. Typically the chain will go around the dock cleat and over the edge of the dock to...

Re: Immigration in Puerto Plata, Dom Rep

Ocean World is a first class facility and makes check in very easy. It should be avoided however if a strong northerly swell is running because the surge at the docks can be intense.

Consider your draft also. The waters inshore of the inlet are shallow and constantly shifting. Given the well known danger of the inlet itself, and the uncertain depths on the inside, I'd...

Re: Best beaches to anchor/moor by in NY/NJ/CT tri-state area?

The beaches on Sandy Hook are quite nice and there is plenty of room to anchor on the bay side. Another possibility is Jones inlet on the south shore of Long Island.
