Re: Catamaran collides with object off DR/ hitting a container at sea

Just to relate having presumably hit a shipping container at sea:

We were racing a 55' sloop named "Cannibal" (https://www.sailingtexas.com/scustom54100.html) designed by Morgan Embroden...

Re: big beds on mono hulls

Without being specific, one of the most comfortable set ups we had was a 7' x 7' bed, that way we could sleep fore and aft, or athwartship in some circumstances. in heavy weather we did have a bunk...

Re: Sales tax on a boat that will be leaving the country

There are ways in some states, which include LLC in another state where there is no sales tax or personal property tax (that should be a decision). Most states you sail thru, unless go up the SLW...

Re: Advice on handling marina damage with other boat

I would certainly agree with those who say let the insurance handle it.

I would take an exception to your comment:

"Res ipsa loquitur" The thing speaks for itself. In fact for the...

Re: Insurance requiring second adult

Not only can they require second adult, but in some voyages they want a "survey" of the experience and ability of those who are going to be aboard. Just having a second person, does not guarantee...

Re: Do you ever anchor, backwards!?

Many parts of the world it is "normal" to anchor for and aft--often to increase the number of vessels in an anchorage, but also to keep the bow into a swell.

During the 1982 Cabo Storm, several...

Re: We ran into a bridge!

I hear this redundant claim "rigging wire does not stretch". That is just not true. With enough force any rigging wire will begin to yield. An example happened to a boat which I was a partner. ...

Re: Cruising down from San Diego to mainland mexico

Although I have been up and down this coast a number of times, it was in the 1960's to 1990's eras, and there are many changes shoreside since then. The weather, and topography remains pretty much...

Re: FL to NY with my power boat - pure ocean trip (no ICW)

I have only done this run a couple of times, both inside on the ICW and offshore (Mast 62 1/2' and draft 6.5 feet--ocean crossing going motor sailor with range of over 2,000 miles under power).

Re: Researching Blue Water Boats

We have sailed about 70,000 miles with Labrador retrievers aboard, including a N. Atlantic crossing where we had winds in excess of 65 knots for 3 days and seas to match for 5 days...The Lab was 10...

Re: Two scenarios: Alternator to LFP House Bank or Alternator to Starter battery?

I have been using LiFePO4 batteries for house bank for 3 years. I used a 30 amp Sterling Battery to Battery charger run off the start battery, which is charged by the alternator. Works well.

Re: I have to have a pedestal made - why not a tabernacle?

We successfully tabernacled a 60' mast. The pivot point was near the boom gooseneck, so the mast was laid into a crutch, then the mast was also in a crutch when fully down. We used a 12,000#...

Re: Abandoning ICW (Mast Height) will I care ?

We cruised a pilot house ketch with main mast at 62.5' air draft, (plus VHF antenna, which went "tingaling" a times under bridges) with 6.5' draft up and down the ICW (plus outside trips). That boat...

Re: Minimum depth under keel

Full keel boats I have anchored with only a couple of inches in Belize. Most places I want at least several feet. Fin keel, I would feel more comfortable with the boat's draft plus tidal range. ...

Re: Why are outboards so unreliable?

During the last 70 years I have owned multiple outboards. The ones which I had problems were the old 2 cyl, 2 hp OMC motors. More recently I have voyaged thousands of miles with single larger...

True, and thanks for pointing that out. Hopefully each person who reads responses can use the information and his own perimeters to determine if the 2.5 gallon water heater is a good match for his...

Re: Point of use hot water heaters

I figured that there would be some objection: We live in Florida, where the ambient temperature of the water is far higher than 60*. The max temp. of our Bosch 2.5 gallon is 140* (some others have...

We removed the 6 gallon water heater and replaced with a Bosch 2.5 gallon point of use (got rid of about a pint of "dead" space water which would be wasted between the water heater and galley or...

Re: Cruising from your own dock? Real Estate Options?

I also live in Pensacola--actually Perdido Bay, by the Alabama state line. There are certainly "affordable" waterfront homes, under $400K. But issues are two fold: One is deep enough draft--for...

Re: Hampton Road to Florida to Bahamas on December

I would stay in the ICW most of the way down. If a strong Norther comes along--the Gulf Stream crossing may be a major issue.

The Redwing 35 Mk 1, is a "racer/cruiser" has a fin keel, and...

Re: Upper size limit

We cruised a 62' LOA pilot house boat to Europe and the Med in the 80's. Finding a marina berth was difficult at times. We had 7'draft. Not too much of an issue, but Fl, and ICW is difficult, and...
