Re: Advice on a 28 to 30 FT Sailboat for 2 hour Tours

Sounds like a dream retirement for you. I had a 30' C&C and loved it enough that only another C&C could replace it when I bought my next boat. You should consider the effect of having a tiller vs...

Re: Beautifying a 45 degree join in plywood?

You can use veneer tape. Building supply stores carry it, self adhesive (with heat but you might prefer to use contact cement) and of several kinds of wood. It can be cut with scissors.

Re: Lines to Cockpit / Mast

The layout of the boat makes a difference. And, will you be sailing with crew or alone? A friend had a 28' with narrow side decks and a dodger- it was a task to get to the mast. I have a 33' C&C...

Re: Can most work be done while docked or do you bring it on land?

Will you be in a marina that keeps boats in the water 12 months a year, or do you haul for winter, like Capt. JGW in Muskegon, MI? In the spring, lots of work is done before the boats go back in the...

Re: New Boater - is it normal protocol for a marina to not cover damages from dock ha

The dock hand shouldn't throw the line in the water, but the boat crew should have been ready to pull the line aboard quickly when it was released. That's the captain's responsibility. Did the dock...

Re: What happened to the "small" "Affordable" cruisers?

Photos of original Austin Mini's next to the current MINI Coopers demonstrate the same trend in cars.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

My Atomic 4 did the same thing, but consistently. I wired in a switch to turn off the alarm until the engine was actually running. Otherwise I couldn't hear it start over the buzzer.

Re: Standard (normal) colors of boat lines?

In my limited experience, I have found it common to have the spinnaker sheets coded red for port and green for starboard to help sort them out quickly. It works well even if it is not a "convention".

Re: Affordable masthead combination anchor light and tricolour recommendations.

The masthead is a common place for your VHF antenna. I have read that some LED's interfere with reception if the are near antennas, so do your research before going that route.

Re: Dock Queen any good?

Ontario means fresh water use, not salt water; so that is a definite "plus". Not mentioned in previous answers is to check the through hull valves. Getting a surveyor is a good idea if the boat will...

Re: Thoughts on using ABS pipe for an exhaust gooseneck

"Cheaper and lighter" sounds like inadequate considerations to chose this material for this application, considering the consequences from failure.

Re: Lake superior to Florida best route

"Best route" implies you have some important criteria to meet. Best for what purpose? Are you interested in time to complete? Length of season to make the trip? Cost? Comfort and simplicity? Safety?...

Re: Roller furler keeps wrapping around forestay

The halyard and the forestay have to be not parallel. I think a 5 degree difference is all that is necessary to keep them from wrapping around each other. The halyard should run below where the...

Re: Boat Yards Hostile to Do-It-Yourselfers

Most contracts of this type include a provision to arbitrate or mediate disputes which means you can't go to small claims court. American Arbitration Association is going to cost most of the $300 if...

Re: Difference between oil filters

I had an unusual problem on a car that may apply. Does your filter mount over a tube that goes into the filter? A short filter blocked the end of the tube and restricted the flow of oil, so don't...

Re: Two (old) men in a small boat - 700 miles

Plan that trip back before you leave. Going North against prevailing winds would be a problem at the wrong time of year.
