Re: YUCATAN AREA MARINAS OR BOAT YARDS?

There is just the one boat yard in Isla Mujeres. I think it's rather expensive too. If your boat floats there are some marinas that look cheap down in the lagoon.

Re: Belize Cruising

San Pedro has fewer bugs downtown than the others, but the anchorage sucks.

Re: Perkins 4.108 - oil in coolant

You might put some dye in in the coolant that detects combustion gas too.

Re: Perkins 4.108 - oil in coolant

There is a small hole in the block and head for the oil passage to the rocker arms. It is on the right side in the middle. There is a possibility that you could tighten the head bolts, but you...

Re: Belize Cruising

Well people are not getting that message. It is the favorite place to go from central Belize. Fuel and water from the dock, safe from the wx fronts. There is even a beach club.
It is obscene...

Re: Rio Dulce

The Mar marine store is not much anymore, mostly left over stuff. There is a great new store next to the bridge that can get all kinds of stuff. They even keep sealants in a refer.

Re: Rio Dulce

A Guatemalan guy who can operate a piece of sandpaper could make Q100 per day. With breaks too.

Re: Rio Dulce

I think the record for recent crossings is 8.2' They use 2 boats, one tilting and the other towing. I heard that the boat was at 45deg.

Re: Recommended Surveyor in Cancun Mexico?

That boat might not survive this storm. It's going to be crazy in Isla Mujers.

Re: Brightside Interior Paint Pimples

Believe it or not you can add "fish eye eliminator" to the paint, it will help. Never ever in your life use silicone wax or polish near something you might paint someday. You should always do a final...

Re: USA West Coast Southbound Voyager seeking free over-winter anchoring?

If you were willing re-anchor every week or so, there would be an almost unlimited number of places to hang out. When you look at some sort of map, all this would be north and east of SF. A bike...

Re: How many barrier coats?

As long as the hull is going to be dry, so bare and fair, coat it with epoxy resin before you paint it. It's a much better surface for paint on bare glass and on glass that has blister problems too....

Re: How many barrier coats?

How many gallons of paint can you afford in Guatemala? They might be trying to save you some dough. You are probably going to spend $475gal on Trinidad too.
It would be a real shame to not protect...

Re: Best place to do a refit

That's not a bad rating in some ways. You could move paint to an A, they do some nice work . Upholstery and canvas work is good too. Machine and welding work is now pretty good also.

Re: Another Low Oil Pressure Query

The standard practice in an airplane engine instillation is to put a small jet in the engine fitting, something like .030". If anything fails, you have a small leak. Also, fill the line from the...

Re: How to strengthen chain link

Brazing takes place at a temp above the temp that melts galvanizing. By the time you got a flow of brazing rod, the galv coating would be gone. Brazing is the best glue for most metals.

Re: How to strengthen chain link

Even if you welded that split link, it would still be weak. It's hard to make some kind of link that will fit the gypsy too. Bigger anchor and no split link?

Re: Transition from Aviation

Other than being a trained mechanic, an A&P's skills don't really cross over to sailboats that well. I think the area where you could get some work would be doing electrical work. Our training in...

Re: Mexico Cruising

If you like to sail it can be great. We often meet a guy who sails down from that part of Texas every year. If you're willing to go for it, you could be back to the US in a week from Roatan or the...
