Re: How to be away from home for extended periods

My experience is similar to those who have said its workable but just takes a bit extra care and forethought. Knowing your boat's systems well, having all the spares you can muster, and staying on...

Re: Vancouver 27F

The "F" is for family. Also known as the 274.. it sleeps 4, a double v berth and two settees.. The more common V27 has the head up front in place of the v berth, with 2 settees and a quarterberth.

Re: Vancouver 27F

The boat has a v-berth where my wife and I both slept. I'm 6'1" and she's 5'3". There are also two settees, both of which are exactly 6' in length, thought the portside has a foot cove which makes...

Re: Is this a good first boat?

Whiteoil, your story sounds familiar to me. I bought a Vancouver 27 in 2010 and before that lived and crewed on a larger 37' for a couple years. I bought my 27' in a similar position.. the PO had...

Re: DOG FRIENDLY FREE anchorages on the way to key West

We cruise with dogs on our 27'. If it's not something you want to do, that's fine, and it's not easy, but again, not the point of the thread. Jeepers.

Re: VHF License

As a practical matter, does any country actually require the Radio Operators license or the Ships license? I have the latter, but at least in the caribbean, I've never been asked for it, and some of...

Re: Any NON-U-tubers out there sailing?

It's never been easier to make a living as a cruiser with all the remote work possibilities these days. Project-based IT work is one good way. I was a website devloper for years onboard. Was still...

Re: Tough and safe family boat

I agree. In my original boat search I felt I absolutely needed a brick outhouse of a boat. If was buying today I'd simply be looking for a great sailing boat that's well built, and there are lots of...

Re: Is a Fridge Worth Installing?

One found its way into our 27' a few years back. You do come to appreciate it / depend on it. Depends how you care to look at it. We have one of the smaller engel fridge/freezers and never did find a...

Re: Inflatable padleboards

We've had two onboard for a couple years. Our Red Paddle board has performed great, but our Starboard WindSUP board's main seam delaminated after about a year in the harsh caribbean heat and now...

Re: Another "I want to buy a boat" thread...BUT WAIT....

Sounds doable to me. Every boat and every cruiser is different, so figure out your constraints and get the smallest boat you feel you can be comfortable on for a long period of time. You mentioned...

Re: Water reserves during passages; emergency desalinators.

A small handheld manual WM isn't necessarily cost prohibitive. Used Katadyn 06s and 35s can be bought used for a fraction of the price of new. You will likely just need a new membrane for it. All in,...

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

Yeah, it was for me. Though a boat's displacement can be a better measure of size and comfort than LOA. My V27 is 9000lbs, so pretty big within the footprint of a 27' hull. Also like a lot of others...

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

There are many lightly built production boats that are much better boats than the one I was initially on, an O'Day as it happened, so that was just my unique and possibly misguided reference point...

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

As a small full keel boat owner, I'd partially echo what others have said about small full keel classics not being quite as desirable as when I first bought mine 10 years ago. She's a great boat and...

Re: Blue Water Monohulls Under 32ft

Re: Full Keel Sailboats

It's always fun to read the small boat threads. I've had a Vancouver27 for about 10 years now and it's still the right boat for us, though for the last couple we've just been overwintering onboard....

Re: Mixing Group 27 and Golf Cart Batteries

Another possibility if you have the height in the compartment is to get a pair of L16s, J305s or similar as opposed to 4 golf cart batts.
