Re: Cruising pre-children - worth the opportunity cost??

My son is nearing 2 years old. I took my first ASA course when he was a few months old. I bought a Catalina 30 when he was 1. I had the grand vision of sailing down the Texas coast learning the...

Re: Off Topic. Many months (if not a year or more) to get a boat. In the interim?

My RE taxes are over 3%! But we don't have state income tax. My RE taxes are nearly half of my monthly home payment. If my home appreciates 3%, I break even. Factoring the mortgage, I'm losing...

Re: Off Topic. Many months (if not a year or more) to get a boat. In the interim?

I agree with SV Bacchus. My dad is a strict "no borrowing except for real estate" guy. But after his time in Thailand serving in the Air Force, he came home to 15% + interest rates. Go ahead and...

Re: BVIs in September?

We were looking into an October charter. September is high point in hurricane season, so there is a relatively low probability of a tropical system ruining a day or two of the trip, even lower...

Re: Off Topic. Many months (if not a year or more) to get a boat. In the interim?

My '88 Catalina 30 is fully insured. I don't have a note on it. I insured through Geico Marine after getting 5 or 6 quotes. My car insurance is also through Geico. I recommend getting an umbrella...

Re: Catalina 30 & My first boaters sin...

I'm enjoying the responses, it is amazing how different we all interpret the same space.

I think for us, and especially my wife, we like the more open feeling of the main salon. She does not like...

Re: Catalina 30 & My first boaters sin...

And tent manufacturers call a tent with 51 inches of width a two person tent. Boat manufacturers must use similar dimensions.

Re: Catalina 30 & My first boaters sin...

I would sleep in the aft berth by myself. No way two people are sleeping with any level of comfort under the cockpit floor and steering box. The word coffin comes to my mind. But that will be...

Re: Most important thing to a new boat owner?

I bought my first boat this past November. It is 20 years older than yours but these lessons could apply to a newer vessel too.

Discuss with the surveyor exactly what will and will not be...

Re: Catalina 30 & My first boaters sin...

Our first sailboat is a '88 C30 mkii. We bought it last November. Mechanically, it was in good shape, fairly well maintained but some aging equipment and running rigging. We looked at several boats...

Re: What corrosion process is going on in this steel deck?

I see this in my line of work in steel pipe exposed to atmosphere near salt water. Most likely chlorides were on the surface before painting. Sand blasting alone won't remove chlorides and in...

Re: Hello (again) from Clear Lake, Texas!

Lou Stahlberg surveyed the boat and I did go through a broker, Little Yacht Sales. Captain Rick Weiler was my buyers agent.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I'm a Weber fanboy. I have a Weber kettle, Smokey Mountain and a Genesis. Looks like my new boat will be sporting a Q1200!

Re: Boat US to Geico Marine

We are going with Boat US/Geico Marine for our new-to-us sailboat. They had three levels, "premiere", "value", and liability only. As far as I could tell, the biggest difference between premiere...

Re: Florida coast living selection?

I grew up in Key Largo. You may be able to get a canal-front home on ocean side in the Upper or middle Keys in the upper end of your price range, though I haven't priced real estate lately....

Re: Hello (again) from Clear Lake, Texas!

I've got some leaks at a few chain plates and a few port lights, and one at the muffler raw water inlet.

I reserved a slip at Watergate. I think we visited every marina on the lake!

Hello (again) from Clear Lake, Texas!

I've been a member here since 2012 but haven't posted anything since then. It look longer than planned, but within the past year I completed ASA 101 and various mentor sails and group sails. Well,...

Re: Camera choices

+1 for DPreview. Great resource.

My only problem with recommending a DSLR is that you'll easily exceed your budget getting a wide angle lens, standard zoom and telephoto zoom to cover the broad...

Re: Camera choices

In your price range, you have numerous options from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Fujifilm. It's hard to recommend one camera. However, I'm a huge fan of Fujifilm mirrorless cameras. Their...

Re: Hello from Clear Lake, Texas

Thanks, again everyone. Somehow I always end up by the water. Wouldn't want it any other way...except maybe sitting on the water in Trunk Bay.

Phil - Thanks for the welcome. Exciting, indeed. I live 20 minutes from Kemah on the other side of I45, though I work in Sugar Land.

Pat - I have not. Wow, there are quite a few clubs and...

Re: Hello from Clear Lake, Texas

Ah, well I can appreciate the pride in workmanship. I'm sure our first boat will need work, and I am somewhat looking forward to learning the craft of marine maintenance. I can only hope the...

Re: Hello from Clear Lake, Texas

I had to google AIS. Pretty neat, similar principles to flying an airplane.

Mimsy - Thanks for the recommendation. Good to know that they are proactive about those types of things. BTW,...
