Well, it's time to buy an anchor and I'd like to spend some $ with you. I see the S100 Spade is 529.99. Can you tell me how much shipping would be to 27370 in NC? Would there be sales tax on it? All the best and thank you!

Spade Anchor, just noticed the profile comment about my friends absurdly long rode. He's a bit of a nut frankly.

But on the night in question he drug aft past another boat and the anchor hooked that boat's rode and climbed it up out of the water and hooked on the bowsprit.

I can't explain it but I saw it happen. My speculation, with that much rode and a 180 wind shift from the squall the boat built up good speed before snatching the hook out backwards.

Crazy night, half the boats there drug. Several on the beach.

I enjoy solo sailing and have been doing so for years. As has been pointed out, most boats can be configured for single handing. The only things I recommend are: A full keel (it's more comfortable and easier to handle in bad conditions, and you don't need to manually steer quite so soon as with a fin),
A centre cockpit is next. You will stay drier, and be away from the pitching ends in a bad blow, so you won't get tired so quickly.
And it is essential to over-do the safety. You need mast steps, jack lines rigged whenever you venture offshore, clip on points in the cockpit, the galley and fore deck. Extra strong stanchions, mast pullpits; and have such things as emergency steering ready for immediate use.

The only drawback to single handing is that you will see the most amazing things along your route. It can be disappointing when you wish to share and the only other entity is a booby on the spreaders whose main contribution is to crap all over the deck just before taking to wing.
