Food Hammocks
Anyone have a source or a pattern to make them? I don't care for the cheapo nylon ones at WM.

Tnx Duke...all good ideas...next step was to find a good fishing stuff store, or get handy with macrame.

Re: Food Hammocks
I have tied my own gear nets. It takes a lot of line and time. I even set up a peg-board to help keep the spacing correct. MHO, at best, it is a winter time project. Unless I have a lot of time to do nothing, I will not make another gear hammock.

Re: Food Hammocks
Keep in mind if you get netting that's very fine, like mono-filament, it will cut thru anything soft, like fruit, that you hang in it.
The laundry mesh would prolly be good, and I like the macrame thing!

Re: Food Hammocks
There is a hamock pattern at the following website. I made one up for summer sleeping but I suppose it would work for food storage too. You might want to change the dimensions to fit your needs.

+1!
Exactly.
We placed our fruit in plastic 'baskets' in a dark and well ventilated cockpit locker.

Re: Food Hammocks
After using hammocks for years, I finally got tired of the bruised fruit and vegetables from swinging into the cabin sides. So I have gone to baskets which sit on the work bench in the walkway. We shall see what I think after a year of that.

Re: Food Hammocks
I have 3 WM hammocks that I have used and love them. One is outside, under the solar pannels, for onion, potato and root vegatables. One inside for bulky items like crackers and cookies, the third for overflow right after provisioning. I agree that I no longer use for fruits and other veggies due to spoilage.

Re: Food Hammocks
BTDT. Even hammocks slung transversely and not able to hit anything when pitching are tough on the contents. I turned a lot of apples into sauce and oranges into juice before I accepted that all the photos of lovely fruit in hammocks are just posed photos or that the boats don't really go offshore.

Re: Food Hammocks
We have a wire mesh basket that hangs from a padeye on the bottom of the boom when we are at anchor or in dock. It gets stuck on a berth while underway. Keeps the potatoes and onions and garlic and such fresh longer.

Ventilation is good for veg, particularly root veg. The wire baskets are fine for day sails as you describe but will not work on passage.

Re: Food Hammocks
Hammocks must be athwartships not fore and aft. I keep a small shock cord in the hammock to keep contents from swing wildly when in a seaway;haven't had to reef it yet.
