Quick Question. which detergents work in saltwater other than Joy. Can't find Joy in Toronto OK before this develops into who or where Joy is I'm talking dish soap. thanks all

Dawn also works well in salt water.

Correct. You should rinse the plates in cold fresh water every 3rd or 4th day. A wash in hot fresh water once a week is a good idea.

Aren't the plates a bit crusty after a week... or are you a one pot stew cooker and it don't matter....

Palmolive liquid is good too. Store brands may be less concentrated than the name brands such as Dawn, Palmolive and Joy, so here's one place where it doesn't pay to skimp. I remember buying some super-concentrated laundry and dish detergents in Australia. A very little went a loong way. Can anyone fill us in on the best buys there and in other countries?

Janet, Idon't know about Oz but had some dealings in the "soap"undustry. There is a particular problem with soaps, powders and liquids, and dosage. If you tellpeople "use this much" they always use more, assuming more is better and it will make things cleaner. With a good soap, that's just throwing money doewn the drain and even worse, leaving residue that won't rinse clean because now there's too much soap. So how much a brand is concentrated is a whole special marketing game. Who are your core customers and how will they behave?
In the lanudry detergents, there's a realtively new "High Efficiency" (HE) same being tried out now. The new washers say "use HE detergent only" and the "new" HE detergents are basically just the same old detergent with less water in it, to save shipping and handling costs. But the industry is hoping the if the washers all say the soap is SPECIAL...maybe the washees wull stop trying to use too much soap.
Same ting in other kinds of soaps. Lots of folks say Dawm is too expensive. Others point out that you just need a drop or two, if you're squirting it out wholesale, sure, that's too expensive.

Meon scented Joy was also tested quite some years ago, by marine biologists, and proven to be a decent shark repellent too,forwhat it's worth. Not just dishsoap, but Lemon Joy.

yep. Orvus paste. A bit pricey if you compare by volume, but when you look at what it does...

Used by textile specialists to clean delicate fabrics ( I used it for years to clean wedding gowns)

Used by horsemen to bathe Thoroughbred horses, notoriously finicky animals with all sorts of skin issues. (I've used it on horses, dogs and my infant6 daughter as well as myself, hair and skin)

Get the gallon jar, it will last years as you use only the smallest amount. It can be made into a lower concentration dilution in a squeeze bottle to facilitate use.

Available often at feed and livestock stores.

Apparently Orvus is another fine P&G product, but their MSDS for it says it is almost all sodium lauryl sulfate, which is an irritant and not something for prolonged skin contact. Horses, of course, may have thicker hides. :-)

Just FYI, lathering or suds means nothing as to how well a soap or detergent cleans (even in salt water). We as a society have been led to believe this from adverts, and manufactures put in additives that do nothing but produce bubbles so we think the soap is doing something. However from a chemical standpoint, it means nothing.
