Re: Why can't people tie dinghies up properly ?

Try to stay away from all the others, same goes for boats, parking cars, planes, etc.

Maybe why I’m fit, this end up with me walking a good deal lol

Ah yes, and when you get them all retrained in that we can start on the short painter versus long painter and the motor up versus motor down problems.

Perhaps someone could start a petition signing effort and then present it to Boat US to encourage them to start a large campaign. Just a thought.

Re: Why can't people tie dinghies up properly ?

You can’t make something fool proof, fools are to ingenious. Last year I ran my painter through the eye of the cleat with a bowline on a busy dinghy dock under all other lines. returned a few hours later to find my painter untied with a couple of loops around the cleat. No possible reason to untie the bowline but since it was untied and I left a long line to my dink, I guess it was my fault in thinking it was secure.

Evidently the Newport Ri Martine Center, a great place to go for Cruisers, limits the number of Dinks at the dock. I'm guessing because of complaints of crowding. Dont tie your painter too short for the dink shuffle.

I will more often tie to a feature of the dock other than a cleat or sometimes go through the eye of the cleat. Even in areas where a chain is necessary, putting the chain through the cleat leaves it open more more figure 8 folks.
Yeah - but do you do it whist whistling (or, more particularly, with a whistle onboard)...???

True. Having said that, I'm afraid only the ones that already do it "the right way" are posting in this thread. No one is likely to write: "Oh, dang, after all these years, now I finally know how to do it properly!"

BTW, love your signature!

Re: Why can't people tie dinghies up properly ?

We padlocked to the dock all the time - stainless chain, not necessarily a cleat. Too many dinghies stolen, untied, taken by accident by drunkards etc etc. When in remoter areas getting a replacement even if insured is a real PITA. Once we used the dinghy dock in Martha's Vinyard with chain and lock we were the only dinghy. We came back in two hours the dock was full and a rude note left on our dinghy about how inconsiderate we were. Some people on the dock said no one ever locks their dinghy there, two days later one is stolen.

Oh dang, after all these years now I know how to do it properly!
Although I much prefer taking the dingy to a beach. Rarely do we go to a dock.
But when we do, now I know!!!

I do favor this advice; however, I've been at a few dinghy docks where the props would bounce against rock at low tide. I took up the practice that I first saw used in Marsh Harbor. An old damaged fender can be recycled for use as a bailer as well as a soft dinghy prop cover. Just cut off 6 to 8 inches of the fender end and add a rope handle. The handle can be made the proper length to cap the prop and hook the rope over the transom motor mounts.

It used to be the proper manners to be first-in , first out , that is , you tie your round and 2-1/2s or bowline at the bottm , or last of whatever lines were on the cleat.

Re: Why can't people tie dinghies up properly ?

When living aboard anchored out, I got up early, went to work and came home late. Someone in the anchorage took my dingy and when I found it he justified taking it because it must have been abandoned. Dingy thieves.......

Moved my dingy to another area, dragged it up and tied to a limb. Had no more problems.
