Re: Watch Keeping Single Handing

I've found that watch keeping with two on board is not much better, no matter how you slice up the hours.

There's always one

It was tongue-in-cheek, but sheesh. What "shipping lane"? He saw what - 7 ships in 79 days? I think he had been adrift for two weeks before he saw the first one. And he drifted 1800 miles across the ocean.

There are other threads dedicated to opinions on the merits and negatives of single handling.
So be considerate of your fellow boaters who are single handling.
Thanks
The opening post of this thread acknowledged the danger and "illegality" of prolonged single-handing, so Tabby's post is entirely on topic.

Curious that you didn't offer a counter-argument to Tabby's reasoning that 15-minute sleep increments are not safe.
Which is irrespective of the mindless idiocy of suggesting one could maintain a 15-minute sleep cycle over an extended period, as was suggested by one member. Presumably based on the flawed reading of a flawed article.

Don't recall calling anyone an idiot.. do recall saying I was not prepared to fly with a dedicated shaker syphon in my baggage.
A couple of euros will buy me enough clear plastic hose to use each trip.
There's two ways to read a post.. how its written or how you choose to interpret it..
Including words like mindless idoicy leaves no need for interpretation.

I presume your referring to this post Lodesman..
Saying someone is not tuned in to all their senses is not calling them idiots.. its just they have not had to learn what nature is telling them.. hence reliance on weather apps and sat phones so they can get weather updates from shore on passages.. and why my friend from London asked "how do you know where the winds coming from".
Many will learn with time on the water and many will continue to rely on instruments, apps and sat phones.
Basic knowledge like a low starts with NW'ly then swings N then NE as it passes or an increasing swell from a specific direction gives 24hrs notice of a gale approaching and its time to run S a bit.. or N depending on hemisphere.
As for the 15min sleep technique, never tried it.. but I do practice the 15min awake technique between snoozes..

"Curious that you didn't offer a counter-argument to Tabby's reasoning that 15-minute sleep increments are not safe."

Re-read the whole thread,25 postings, all of them.
Found this thread very helpful as I single hand many times.
Some posters have links to the physiology of sleep, others to management of a sailboat under way.
Cannot find any reason to counter-argument any of the techniques discussed,It really comes down to what works for any individual skipper.
And again my thanks to all contributions.
Life is good.
Even for single handlers!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Watch Keeping Single Handing

There are the cycadian rhythms and others. Many years ago there was a word for this good day - bad day rhythm but I have forgotten it and can’t find it. Not the infradian rhythm.

But yeah, we all have bad days when should just go sit somewhere safe. Or at least I do.

I know it when I look at something I did and I go “FFS, Really?”
