‘Captain Coward’ Francesco Schettino of the Costa Concordia hands himself in to start prison sentence after his final appeal was rejected......

Re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

I somewhat take issue with the title'Capt Coward' because, while he alledgedly did leave his vessel before several of the passengers and crew, there was a lot of confusion over when he actually left the vessel.
More factually, he was involved with one of the female crew, showing off his prowess by passing too close to the island to salute his former mentor who had retired there and my not have even been on the bridge but was otherwise involved with his romantic interest!
I heard this from one of the bridge officers who was aboard the stricken ship at the time.
Of course, they are all Italian and affairs of the heart are very important to them.
My guess is he was thinking with his little head rather than his big one!
Cheers, Phil

I take exception with the "Capt" part.

He's a disgrace to any self-respecting seafarer.

Just one guy's opinion, but I think my reasons are sound.

COMING SOON to PBS: "SUNKEN SHIP RESCUE"
Premieres WED AUG 30 at 9/8c on PBS
A team of 500 engineers and divers struggle to raise the Costa Concordia cruise ship.

Follow the epic operation to secure, raise, and salvage the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which ran aground and tragically capsized off the coast of Italy on January 13, 2012, killing 32 people. The massive wreck—with a 160-foot-long hole in its hull—stretches the length of three football fields, weighs 45,000 tons, and was half submerged on the site of a protected reef. Moving it from its precarious perch on the edge of an underwater cliff turned into a technical and logistical challenge of staggering proportions. Join NOVA as we follow a team of more than 500 divers and engineers working around the clock as they attempt the biggest ship recovery project in history.
