I have no problem with folk who wish to discuss global warming or climate change and I am sure there are lots of forums on the internet that can accommodate such a discussion. But this is Cruisers Forum, so we will want to keep the thread on target and not allow it to hijacked by those with strong views on GW or CC.

Interesting, thanks. The double ended icebreaking capacity would be very useful. As in heavy ice you spend nearly as much time going backwards as forwards, trying to get a run up at the the thicker sections. I'll have to dig out some icebreaking videos I have from the Aurora Australis. Multiyear ice is the real worry. So damn hard. Hitting it is like hitting concrete.

And here is my favorite NWP video. Phil and his family did an impressive job of getting though one tricky year. After the beating here the boat meeded a fair bit of panel beating! But made it back to Aussie without needing to much work.

I was talking about the Canadians decision to restrict and manage boats that attempt the NWP noted in the Cornell site.

Bollicks.

Aluminum alloys have very exceptional performance at cryogenic temperatures including 5083 the most common Aluminium marine grade alloy. Not sure where you obtained your materials knowledge but if I were you I'd ask for a refund.

Many carbon steels, however, have brittle transition temperatures around the freezing point of water. The titanic sinking was specifically impacted by the poor understanding of brittle transition temperatures of carbon steels back in the early 20th century.

I have no visibility into the actual failure mode in this case but can assume that high strain failure due to collision or crushing of the hull in ice probably had some part to play in the disaster.

That seems like a crazy route to take a sailboat to in the first place. A bit too cold for me. Glad no life was taken.

Re: Boat sinks in The Northwest Passage

Snow Petrel,

Read the book last night. I thought it was wonderful. I’ve read a good bit of artic sailing but never as good a description of making an ice passage as your Father provided. There was much I liked in the book and found the simple straight forward but detailed reporting to be compelling. I had got the free download but just ordered my copy from Amazon.

My many thanks to you and your Father.

Thanks for your kind words, I am glad you enjoyed the book. My father writes much better than I do!

Pack ice is nasty stuff, I saw the damage to the aluminum 60 footer Spirit of Sydney when she came back from commonweath bay after being caught in the pack for a few days. It was brutal, lifelines all bent over. Big Ring frames buckled 12 inches inwards and a whole side deeply dented. Very sobering... And 3 seasons sailing south on the Aussie Icebreaker really brings home how quickly it can change, and be dangerous even for a icebreaker. My parents were on the Akademik Shokalski when she got trapped in pack ice pushed up against the Mertz glacier. They ended up being evacuated by helecopter.

I think it must have been caused by global warming or President Trump.

Re: Boat sinks in The Northwest Passage

Just stumbled across this story. Seems three communities could not get supplies this year.

https://peakoil.com/_amp/s/nationalp...s-stranded/amp

It does not talk about past precedent for getting supplies to these locations. When was the last time they were cut off? Are these historic villages? I don’t really know their history.

A quick search says it was not a permanent settlement until 1921 when Hudson’s Bay set up shop.
