Apologies Jim, I read the prices only a few weeks ago as around NZ$7k upwards (maybe double that?) for the various systems on offer, including some pretty clever displays. 3 good systems available I recall. Yes even my modest plastic tub will cost more than that to replace if I run her on the rocks.

Vast majority of people I've seen run aground between the Great Lakes and Bahamas were following the magenta line on their chart plotters ....... it ma be coincidence but they also had CQR anchors

Yonks ago, I saw a pretty little ketch at Opoua.Elderly couple.
Pardey-ish length. There were 5 anchors on deck ready to be used.
My kinda yoties. The little pram dink on the coachroof was just right.

Due diligence regarding paying attention, calling ahead for local knowledge, etc. aside, my philosophy is that if you don't run-aground every once in awhile, you're not getting out enough!

One can also just loose situational awareness...
Once upon a time I was in the Key's on my dad's sailboat. We just had a binoculars, compass and paper charts back then. None of this fancy stuff of today.
Dad was down below trying to fix the head. I swear that the sanitation hose was corrugated landscape hose put in by the previous owner...
We were on the inside of the keys, heading north if I remember right, and the channel was a half circle. I was looking through the binoculars at the next marker but something was not right so said the little man on my shoulder. Kept looking at the chart and then looking at the marker but something was not right. The little man on the shoulder was hitting me upside the head by now so I put the engine in neutral to figure out what was wrong.
Dad popped up from down below at about the time I realized what was wrong. I was NOT looking at the next channel marker but the one after it. I was not looking far enough to starboard to pick up the correct marker. Told him to go back to work on clearing the hose while I changed course slightly.
I was about 15-30 seconds away from hitting the side of the hard channel.

As others have said, it can be bad/outdated charts, inattention, 'new' objects on the bottoms or just bad luck. (Not that I rule out dumb.)
I ran aground (only time) where a cut emptied like a river, twisting and depositing silt on the inside of the curve; River Running 101. I've seen deep-keel boats find uncharted rocks (now charted) and bumped a rock in a supposedly flat, 4-5' bay -- good thing Catalina 22 has a CB. Watching newbies find their way into the shallow lagoon at Barra de Navidad is a spectator sport, and tides...simple math, but so many boats end up on their sides.
What I've come to is: a) pay attention, b) give known hazards -- see charting discussions -- plenty of room and c) learn and be prepared to kedge off. Oh, and be kind...the next example could be you.

Sailing into Anegada on a bareboat charter, my depth gauge got down to reading 0.5 feet. What the heck do you do? Bet that the charter company put a good size fudge factor in there and plow (hopefully not literally) ahead? I instead did a sharp U-turn and radioed the main restaurant in the harbor (can't recall the name) and the very nice lady there told me that she was concerned i could not get in with a 6'7" draft. That entrance to Anegada is subject to some shifting sands but I was still surprised that my chart briefer was cool with me going to Anegada if it was really that close.
So, back we went to Jost Van Dyke. My crew was really disappointed, but better safe than sorry. It's a real disadvantage with chartering that it is really difficult to know such things precisely.

I'm one of the 2 types of boaters, the one who HAS found bottom, not the one who will. And, at the best possible moment, trial run of a powerboat I was demoing for a buyer in a spot I'd been for 40 years prior.
Too much sales chatter and then grrnnnnk, hard aground at 30 knots. I only polished the props and he bought the boat anyway but after a $500 Seatow, just 60' to deep water again. It was in a spot in a state channel where it reads 21' deep and 20 feet to port, seagulls were standing knee deep.
