So far, just dreaming...

Hello all!

I'm new to this forum, although I've been reading several posts as a guest. Since I'm from Sweden I'm likely to fall into a couple of language oriented traps, but I'll do my best to make myself understood.

Unfortunatly I don't own a boat as of yet, but I dream vividly about it. In my most foundest dream me and my wife sails the seven seas in a boat we've made ourself. That is far ahead in the future though. First we need to learn properly how to sail, then I suppose it's a process of trying different boats untill we understand which properties we like, and what design details make up these properties.

As of yet this forums is to me food for thought and most importantly for dreams.

Best wishes!

/Jesper

Re: So far, just dreaming...

Thank you for your warm welcome Boatsman!

Oh, you've read it? A great book. I'm not that much into plunder and killing as they are, my sailing dreams are a lot more peaceful...

Hello Jesper.

I got to go to Sweden once. Went to pickup a brand new Saab 340 Turbo Prop aircraft at the factory in Linkoping.

By a boat. I just did! lol

Make your dream a reality!

Well said, Jesper. Good luck.

Where will your home port be in Sweden?

Re: So far, just dreaming...

Three more welcomes in a single day! I'm overwhelmed!

Thank you SkiprJohn for your welcome.

Thats cool Sea Ya Beaches, I've got friends in Linköping, perhaps we were even there the same time. It's about 800 km (~ 430 nm or 500 miles) from my city though, so I'm not there often... :P The next time I find myself with 10k dollar without a 10k large hole to put them in, I'll buy a boat - thats a promise. I hope your new boat and you will get along well!

Thank you Neo! I'm not sure. Right now I live in Umeå in northern Sweden. A nice town for sure, but not ideal for sailing. There are not much to look at, far between islands and no interesting sealife, just water, algae and terns. Besides the summer is very short and the winter is long with thick ice. We've been discussing moving south (for other reasons too) and then probably to Lund or Göteborg. Göteborg is on the Swedish westcoast and have a lot of beautiful islands, real salty sea (the eastcoast waters are brackish) and living water with lots of fish, shellfish, waterplants and some small wales. Lund is inland, but no more than 70 to 100 km (35-55 nm or 45-60 miles) from good sea (at the westcoast (or east, Lund is far south were our peninsula-shaped country is at its narrowest, I just prefer the westcoast)). I don't know were I'll end up, or which harbour wuold be best. I'll let you know when I finaly get a harbour, were it is.

Cheers to you all!

Oh, I see. I was looking at the satellite images of Sweden on google maps and was wondering why there was not more evidence of dockage along the northern coast.

Thanks for the quick geography lesson. A friend of mine went to the university of guttenburg, his last name is Ramstedt. He was tall and blonde, go figure.

Yes, i suppose it would look almost deserted. Northern Sweden is very scarcely populated. The small towns that we have along the coast usualy have a small harbour for recreational boats and sometimes small fishing vessels. But there are very few larger harbours: from halfway up and to the northernmost part of the eastern coastline we have perhaps four harbours for "industrial sized" ships and ferrys, this in a stretch of about 600 km (320 nm or 370 miles). Note that I really don't know this, it's just the way it looks when passing by. But I believ it is so.
