Author in Research Mode Needs Help

Greetings to all real-life super-salty sailors out there.
I am in the exciting, excruciating, frustrating, sometimes dangerous but always fascinating process of writing a novel. I have a some experience boating but zero at sailing, although I'm working on that.
I am joining this forum in the hope of gathering accurate information for the plot and characters of my story. I am that kind of reader and movie watcher who can't abide nonsense unless it's comical, so as a writer I am particularly careful to get my facts right.
I will be posting questions in the next few weeks or months and will be unfathomably grateful for every helpful answer I get. I have an immense admiration for all of you who have turned sailing into a lifestyle and secretly hope to achieve as much one day.
Cheers

Dee, welcome and I am sure all will be glad to help. Try to be as specific as possible with your questions. Try not to ask opinion based questions. We have a lot of those here ;-) Also, ask for responses from members who have first hand experience with your question. Not heard or read about it. Good luck with your project.

Re: Author in Research Mode Needs Help

Should I be posting questions under this thread, in the relevant sub-topic or both?

Probably better to start a new thread for each question or it will get long and hard to track as the questions change.

Re: Author in Research Mode Needs Help

Unless someone like me reads it and doesn't know you're asking for a fictional scenario lol. Maybe wiser to keep it in the same thread? Or at least identify the purpose of the question?

Aloha and welcome aboard!
It's good that you are asking questions about sailing and terms. I've come across a couple of books with supposed sailors who say the dumbest stuff and have really goofy scenarios while sailing.

Yep.

Note i.a. Hemingway, Jansson, made no such mistakes. Both keen sailors methinks.

Cheers,
