Saying Hi to everyone.

Hi all,

I'm John and in one line: getting into sailing...

First thanks, for all info I already found on this forum, all insights you shared, the stories bad and good, it's really a nice place to visit.
That was one of the reasons to join.

Next is my recent new awakening to sailing.
New since I have it for as long as I can remember, but current phase in life seem to make this old dream possible again.

I'm looking ahead some 4 to 8 years due to the kids being old enough and the financial means to come into place.

As a lot of sailors? I have the ultimate dream of my own boat, build from scratch to my personal wishes, but also realize this will probably not be feasible due to limited means or too big wishes (probably both).

No matter what, my goals are quite extreme since I plan to be able to sail long-term and would like to have the financial means in place to make 'sure' I could do so.

No clue yet where all this will get me, but probably I will be starting to ask specific questions about everything from what courses to do, to other means of getting more info and experience, to dedicated questions about material choices, size and shape, via equipment to destinations.

So basically all the stuff we all seem to struggle with (some seem to know a lot I must admit ).

For now there seems to be more than enough to read or better study.

Re: Saying Hi to everyone.

Welcome. As far as experience you can take courses that are recognized, in Europe you'll look at YRA.

Another cheap way to learn is by going to local boat clubs, marinas etc where people race.
I did a lot of "beer can" races which are primarily fun races but got connected on a boat with a club that was known for high quality racers. Because I showed up every time I quickly became a valuable crew member and was taught the various aspects of racing, tactics etc. I learned so much about sail trim, winds etc. Stuff you're not going to learn by taking lessons and all I had to do was be willing to learn, show up consistently so my boat knew I was reliable and sail during the crappy races, no wind, cold, rain.

Good luck.

Nice! I used to live in the Netherlands for more than 30 years. Went to Maritime College on the island of Terschelling. Belgium is also very nice. Great food and great beers.

If you ever come to Rügen in the Baltic let me know!
