Hello. My interest is primarily OpenCPN which I use on a Win 7 desktop PC, a Win 7 laptop and a Win 10 tablet. I'm hoping to tap into the wealth of expertise held by other members. I'm also a member of the OpenCPN forum on Facebook.

Hi Neil and welcome to the forum.

See you're in Falmouth. I'm currently near Falmouth as well but the other one, over here.

What charts are you using with OpenCPN for the UK? I have seen free charts on Visitmyharbour.com but don't think they download for OpenCPN.

Re: New member

Thanks for the welcome. Which other one? I believe that there are about 13 in total. I know of one in Virginia and I'll be visiting the one in Antigua at the end of April.

I don't believe that the vistMyHarbour OpenCPN charts are free. I paid £48 for UK and Northern Europe about 2-3 years ago. My brother lives in Cowes and introduced me to the store when I visited him. We both have computing/IT backgrounds and are a bit geeky. He mentions the latest wonderful new marine software that he has obtained and I get it too so we can compare notes!

Re: New member

Oh I guess there are a few more but I'm just across the sound from one in New England, Falmouth Massachusetts. All those others are just cheap imitations.

I think the original settlers must have been extremely homesick. Around New England we have of course Falmouth Mass but one in Maine as well. Also Greenwhich, Essex, Lyme, Fairhaven, Warwick, Worcester (pronounced locally WOO ster), the Thames River (pronounced locally Thames, like names with a TH), and couple of Manchesters and a few Chesters and don't forget New London and New York and a few dozen more.

Come sail over here and you'll feel right at home. We even speak the same language.... almost.
