Hey Celestial... I have an antique sextant and wanna dust it off and show grandsons the art of location fixing using spherical trig sans rough seas and angst of being lost.

What recs do you have for a tutorial that might get me properly aligned/pointed?

Unrelated question. Also, how do I get bothersome ads from being included in posts?

I'm afraid my name is implying something different for you than was intended. I do not use a sextant. But I do recommend a back-up GPS onboard. SkiprJohn on here teaches Celestial navigation.

As far as the ads...that's what alleviates the need for us to pay dues.

Celestial mentioned that I teach celestial navigation. My method is the very simplest (fill in the forms and add and subtract) method and I think what you want is the mathematical method with explanations for each step in the process.

Here's three book recommendations from simple to hardest in my point of view:
Celestial Navigation by H. O. 249 by John E. Milligan, The Nautical Almanac for the Year 2011, The American Practical Navigator by Bowditch.

The Nautical Almanac for the current year will be necessary in your computations regardless of which method you want to use so it might be the first that you pick up. If you just want a cheap peek at the explanation it provides you can pick up an old copy very cheaply on Amazon or borrow one from an old sailor at your nearby dock.

Yikes! Bowdich et al. Also, most of my nav was using Air Almanac. Got some catching up to do. I'll start with the simple book from Amazon and also see what the local library has.

I was kind of hoping the process had devolved to the point of filling in some observations in my iPad with the result showing up as an LOP in some other app.
