Just joined.

Just found this site, and am excited to chat with other sailors. I am in process of locating a boat that will take me offshore, single handed aimless cruising. Call me Larry.

welcome to the forums. Have you decided what sort of boat you want yet?

Loads of sound advice available, most of it contradictory. But thats how experience is gained, if you know three ways to solve a problem you have a fair chance.
Your first choice is Cat or Mono. Don't start a debate, just go and see both and choose. Older guys and ladies prefer bigger cats but they cost more.
Don't be afraid of older boats, just get a proper survey done so you know what will need repairing now, and in the next couple of years then check your budget.
You'll also need some idea on places to visit to get an ocean voyager or coast hopper. Three day forecasts are fairly reliable but that only gets you three or four hundred miles which will limit where you can go. And allow for a crewman or she. You never know!!

Ideally, I would like a Valiant 42, 6-8 yrs old. Have also looked at the Caliber 40 which a lot going for it except the cramped nav station.

I have a 2000 caliber 40 LRC, yes i have a nav station off the galley and its cramped
but other wise you couldnt want a nicer crusining boat, it is a joy to sail.. we found ours on the hard in rock hall, md last year.. IF your looking for valiant or caliber I recommend you contact beaufort yachts (they specialize in both ) sonny helped us in our search for our caliber and we did look at valients too..
this is a good time to look and no taxs on used boats in NC.. what incentive!

best of luck

Aloha Larry,
Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy looking for your dream boat. My advice is to talk with offshore sailors and get an idea of what you might want by discussing pros and cons. Also talk your way onto a few boats and take a look at stability and gear.
I like smaller 32 - 36 LOD monohulls but that's my preference.
Kind regards,
JohnL
