Hello from Canada

Hey there,

My wife and I have been getting into this sailing thing since this summer, and have since finished a basic cruising course recently and loved it. I don't know a whole lot about sailing, but I'm super curious and I'm doing research about the feasibility of living aboard.

We're a young mobile couple (25/28yo) and we do our money on the internet, so I thought "Why not try to live on a boat"! All I need for work is 3G and paying a boat is better than burning money on short term rents/airbnb!

So yeah, I thought I'd peek around here, find the best place to ask my questions and learn more about sailing!

Re: Hello from Canada

Welcome...

I'm also from Canada and will be moving aboard full time in January. A little different for us as there are 5 of us (3 kids).

My first question. Where do you want to live on a boat? I ask as there are some logistics issues you need to deal with in some places. e.g. although they may have 3G connections, some places are very unreliable. Not to mention SUPER limited in the amount of data allowed (think 1gb/month).

I was thinking Florida, but I don't actually have an informed opinion =]. Somewhere in the South US. My plan is to visit places this Winter and try to see for myself where I'd like to get started!

Re: Hello from Canada

If you arent geographically limited (as it seems you arent) then you should have no problem finding options for living aboard somewhere in N America. There are plenty of places with good internet outside of N America...maybe consider living abroad on a boat?

Cool.. One piece of advice.. Keep your "employment" to yourself.. Technically, living on a boat in another countries waters, while earning money has tax implications.

Hope to see you out there!

Re: Hello from Canada

You sound like me thirty years ago. In my case it didn't happen that way - "life is what happens while you're making other plans" - but I sure can relate.

We're in the same neighbourhood, and I have some knowledge of sailing, the contract software business, Canadian taxation, and related questions. If you ever feel like a chat with a (somewhat) cynical old(ish) fart who at least understands what you're talking about, let me know. Can't help much with the sailing questions, but maybe with some of the others.
